As a movie critic who has seen more films than I care to remember, I can confidently say that Scott Pilgrim vs. the World remains one of the most delightful and entertaining flicks in my extensive collection. The way Alison Pill brings Kim to life is nothing short of mesmerizing, adding a layer of depth to an already captivating ensemble.
“Cool story, man.” The 2010 cult-classic film Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is chock-full of one-liners and beloved, riotous characters, including the gloriously deadpan Kim. The drummer and ex-girlfriend to Scott is played to perfection by Alison Pill, helping to bring to life the delicious ensemble first laid out in Bryan Lee O’Malley’s iconic graphic-novel series. The creator was then heavily involved in Edgar Wright’s acclaimed film adaptation — and next came the highly anticipated anime series on Netflix. Scott Pilgrim Takes Off has been perceived to be a one-and-done sort of project, but, of course, we’re itching for more. MovieWeb was fortunate to catch up with Pill, who had reunited with her film co-stars for the animated show, to gather any additional insight into the thrilling franchise’s future. She told us:
Recently, there hasn’t been any new information. We have an email group that includes our entire cast, which has been instrumental in bringing our anime series together. It’s a casual request to everyone involved, like Brandon [Routh], Michael [Cera], Jason [Schwartzman], Chris [Evans], Aubrey [Plaza]. They are all part of this email group, and it’s one of my favorite groups to communicate with. Our affection for each other and our shared love for the film, and how it has evolved over time, I believe, keeps us all eager to revisit.
Pill went on to say, ‘I was thrilled that Bryan managed to expand and modify a unique sensation in the graphic novels series. It seemed strange, amusing, and maintained the tone, yet offered an expansion. I adored it – so if there’s another version, I believe we’re all eagerly waiting for it.’
Waltzing Through Your Scenes
With no fresh news about Scott Pilgrim forthcoming, fans of Rachel Pills’ talents can instead enjoy her romantic scenes in Young Werther, alongside Douglas Booth. The film from writer-director José Avelino Gilles Corbett Lourenço features numerous romantic and passionate moments between the two characters, such as a grand waltz scene early on. Rachel Pill herself stated this.
Jose and I began our rehearsals using Zoom initially, prior to our gathering in Toronto. To foster camaraderie, an excellent team-building activity was learning the waltz for a week when we first arrived. As skilled dancers, both Jose and I were tasked with mastering the dance steps and dialogue simultaneously. This unique blend of choreography and scriptwork created a memorable experience that significantly enhanced our on-screen chemistry. If you’re shooting a romantic comedy, I strongly advise incorporating waltz lessons into your preparations to establish a strong physical and verbal connection between your leads.
