In my humble opinion as a film critic, while it’s human nature to yearn for a smoother journey in life, we all comprehend by now that success and joy are never guaranteed certainties. A little advantage can undeniably appear beneficial, but it doesn’t ensure the destination. This is why the so-called ‘nepo babies’ often face criticism – their perceived head start doesn’t guarantee them a triumphant finale.

Interestingly enough, actress Amanda Seyfried, who is set to appear in the upcoming movie adaptation of “The Housemaid” in December 2025, recently used a strong profanity to defend the concept of nepotism in Hollywood’s industry.

Why Did Amanda Seyfried Drop An F-Bomb To Defend Nepo Babies?

Despite the fact that the intense Nepotism Debate in pop culture has somewhat subsided, there remains a lingering query as to whether individuals who follow their parents’ (or relatives’) profession gain an unfair edge over regular people. It seems people are particularly irked when nepotism is evident within celebrity families, and even established figures like Jamie Lee Curtis (who views the discussion as an attempt to belittle and harm) and Angelina Jolie (who acknowledges her own nepotistic background and has nepo babies herself) have voiced their thoughts on this subject.

Mamma Mia’s Amanda Seyfried (who’d love to make the musical franchise a trilogy) isn’t a nepo baby, but that doesn’t mean she’s cool with tearing them down, either. During an interview with eTalk for CTV in Canada, the conversation turned to whether or not the Mean Girls talent (who reprised Karen for some commercials) would let her daughter play that role in one of her own movies one day, and she responded:

I’d gladly help her, but then I think, ‘No, it’s not that simple. She needs to prove herself first.’ …Oh, I was joking there. But hear me out, nepotism isn’t all bad. We need to stop stigmatizing it so much. They didn’t choose their circumstances! It will eventually show who’s talented and who isn’t. If you’re not skilled, you’re not skilled.

In summary, Seyfried acknowledged that she wouldn’t have objected to receiving assistance in her career similar to nepotism (also mentioning her readiness to audition tirelessly for roles she desires, such as Wicked), and she expressed a willingness to support her children if they opt for an entertainment career. However, she doesn’t seem to believe that it’s an easy or guaranteed path.

Her thoughts resonate with Zosia Mamet, a ‘nepo baby’ (a term referring to someone in the entertainment industry who has family connections), whose views mirror hers. They both believe that while her famous last name may have opened some opportunities, it also came with “luggage,” as she entered auditions burdened. In essence, Zosia added that if one lacks the talent or skills to back it up, a name can only take you so far. Both agree that hard work and continuous effort are essential to maintain one’s position in the industry, suggesting that success is not guaranteed by connections alone.

To put it simply, regardless of personal opinion, nepotism seems likely to persist. Therefore, it might be wise to anticipate that those who have benefited from it in your circle are diligent individuals, and focus on your own endeavors instead.
