The superhero genre remains hugely successful, as multiple cinematic universes vie for top spots at the box office. Fans who have followed Marvel films sequentially will remember three distinct Peter Parkers who’ve appeared as Spider-Man in movies. This includes Andrew Garfield, who starred in two films (now available with a Disney+ subscription). The writer of The Amazing Spider-Man, meanwhile, offers a frank opinion on the abandoned third movie.
Fans were ecstatic as Garfield and Tobey Maguire stepped back into their Spider-Man roles in Spider-Man: No Way Home, with many anticipating a potential return in future Marvel films. However, while we eagerly await an official announcement, screenwriter Alex Kurtzman, who worked on The Amazing Spider-Man, recently spoke to ScreenRant about the abandoned threequel. He candidly discussed when the project was shelved, explaining:
You know, we never wrote it. We never wrote it. I did 2 and that was it for me.
Here it is: It appears that despite growing fan petitions for The Amazing Spider-Man 3, it’s now clear that the movie was never filmed following No Way Home. Although there might have been thoughts on how to carry forward Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker storyline, no script was ever developed, which is certainly disappointing.
Rumors about what could have transpired in the now-canceled The Amazing Spider-Man 3 have been slowly emerging over the years, leaving cinema enthusiasts feeling a strong sense of missing out (FOMO). Though diehard Marvel admirers continue to speculate about possible storylines such as The Sinister Six, it’s been revealed that the scriptwriting had not even commenced when Sony decided to end Andrew Garfield’s third standalone film.
I must admit, I was taken aback when the third “The Amazing Spider-Man” movie was called off, considering there were whispers about spinoffs from the Andrew Garfield era. Yet, looking back, Sony’s decision to discontinue that universe paved the way for Tom Holland’s Peter Parker to make his appearance in “Captain America: Civil War” only a few years later.
Although Alex Kurtzman didn’t contribute to the first “Amazing Spider-Man” film, he teamed up with Roberto Orci and Jeff Pinkner to pen the sequel. Regrettably, the second installment served as the starting point for the trilogy’s premature conclusion. However, it did feature some unforgettable scenes, such as Gwen Stacy’s poignant demise, which is often considered the franchise’s most iconic moment. Interestingly, this pivotal scene was reprised when Garfield reappeared in “No Way Home”.
Ever since Tom Holland’s third Spider-Man film premiered in 2021, fans have eagerly anticipated the release of The Amazing Spider-Man 3. Andrew Garfield’s time as Peter Parker has seen a resurgence, leaving us to wonder if he or Tobey Maguire might appear in future collaborative projects like Avengers: Doomsday.
As a die-hard fan of Marvel Cinema, I’m excited to share that on Valentine’s Day, February 14th, we’ll be witnessing the next Marvel blockbuster: “Captain America: Brave New World” in theaters. For now, let’s mark our calendars with these 2025 release dates for upcoming Marvel movies!
