As a lifelong James Bond enthusiast who’s been following this franchise since the days of Sean Connery, I’ve seen my fair share of highs and lows, twists and turns. The latest update on Bond 26 leaves me in a peculiar state of anticipation and apprehension.
Fans of James Bond movies find themselves in a cold, lingering mood after the release of No Time to Die, as they eagerly await updates on the next movie. It’s worth noting that the unusually long wait for Daniel Craig’s final appearance and the three years since then are unusual when considering the franchise’s usual swift production schedule.
While Amazon MGM Studios’ global head Jennifer Salke hasn’t changed too much of what we know about Bond 26, her statement does address the subject in a way that’s comforting. But at the same time, I’m kind of split on my overall reaction to this news, and there’s a good reason why.
Jennifer Salke’s Statement On The James Bond Franchise, And Why It’s Good News
During a conversation with The Guardian regarding the status of the James Bond franchise, Jennifer Salke clarified that any rumored conflicts between Amazon MGM Studios and EON Productions leadership are baseless. Here’s what she shared about Bond 26:
There are numerous intriguing suggestions regarding potential actors that have surfaced, which I find captivating. I believe there are multiple avenues we could explore. We enjoy a strong and harmonious bond with Eon, Barbara, and Michael. Our aim isn’t to alter the exceptional manner in which their films are created. Instead, we prefer to follow their guidance. The global audience is understanding, so we don’t want an overly long gap between movies, but at this moment, we’re not worried about it.
A reassuring aspect of this discussion aligns with my earlier analysis about the 007 highlights from the Amazon MGM agreement: Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson continue to control the franchise as producers. Jennifer Salke’s recognition of this fact demonstrates sound business strategy, emphasizing that Amazon MGM Studios is only responsible for distributing the James Bond films.
As a fan who enjoys Commander Bond’s adventures, it’s reassuring to see the studio and distribution executives shaking hands. It’s also comforting that Ms. Salke acknowledges that no one wants to wait too long for the next James Bond film, but at the same time, they aren’t rushing production yet. However, as you can imagine, this delay means there’s a less optimistic side to the situation.
The Downside To Bond 26’s Status
Initially, you could anticipate a new James Bond movie hitting theaters roughly every two years. However, at the start of Sean Connery’s Bond movies, the series ran as an annual event. But after the release of “Goldfinger,” which set the blueprint for the franchise, the films transformed into a more elaborate and expansive spectacle.
Over the last two decades, the progress towards achieving that result has been somewhat inconsistent. The gap between Spectre and No Time To Die is comparable to the one between License to Kill and Goldeneye, but unlike those periods, there were no corporate disputes or legal battles during the Daniel Craig era.
It’s clear that fans are becoming increasingly curious about the length of time between James Bond movies, given the fast-paced release schedule of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. To be fair, there is a wealth of action featuring 007 if one looks closely. For instance, Kim Sherwood’s Double O Trilogy is two-thirds complete in book form, and we can expect Q’s murder mystery spin-off novel to be published in 2025.
I still have faith in the James Bond legacy returning, and I’m definitely one of those fans that doesn’t want to rush to cast Aaron Taylor Johnson, or anyone, in the role merely to quiet the criticisms. While I still await news with an open mindset, I do hope we can see movement sooner rather than later on Bond 26.
