We’re about two weeks shy from the premiere of Osgood Perkins‘ adaptation of Stephen King’s The Monkey, but we’ve just gotten a peek at the exclusive popcorn bucket that will be sold at AMC theaters, and it’s one of the scariest things we’ve seen since Annabelle. This horror film, based on King’s short story from his 1985 collection Skeleton Crew, stars Theo James, Tatiana Maslany, Elijah Wood, and Colin O’Brien. If the trailer is any sign, it’s set to be one of the most shocking horror movies of the year.
According to Bloody Disgusting’s social media post, the popcorn bucket for the movie “The Monkey” closely resembles the cursed toy from the film. It features a simple yet unsettling monkey design with a marching drum, drumsticks, a maniacal grin, and bulging eyes that would undoubtedly be spooky on any shelf. Although it’s unclear how one accesses their popcorn, it appears that the drum lid could open to reveal the snack within.
King’s readers may observe that the toy depicted in the film varies from the one described in the short story, where a monkey used to clang two cymbals rather than beat on a drum. This discrepancy is attributed to Disney, who reportedly holds rights to the original toy because it appeared in Toy Story. However, according to Perkins, this alteration actually enhances the movie’s tension as he stated to SFX Magazine: “It couldn’t have been cymbals.
Imagine if that object was a drum! It shows how constraints can turn into advantages. If you’re in movie-making and don’t appreciate this idea, then you’re really struggling! My thoughts were, ‘Wow, that’s cool. The drum is superior.’ The drum is like a marching band drum, signaling, ‘Please roll the drums!’ before an event. That’s more exciting than cymbals. So thanks, Disney, for this choice!
‘The Monkey’ Is Getting Rave Reviews Ahead of Its Release
Following closely in the footsteps of Perkins’ 2024 horror blockbuster “Longlegs,” “The Monkey” seems primed for another box office victory for its director. So far, critics have been highly favorable towards the film, with Brian Tallerico from RogerEbert.com praising it as lean and efficient, a quality not often found in many modern horror films or adaptations of short stories.
Meagan Navarro from Bloody Disgusting shared similar thoughts about the horror movie, remarking that “The Monkey” offers a unique Stephen King adaptation. Perkins skillfully trumps reason for an exhilarating late-night chaos, and death has never been both humorous and gruesome. Emma Kiely from Collider also weighed in, again commending the directorial skills of Perkins.
The Monkey serves as compelling proof that Perkins belongs to an uncommon group of horror filmmakers who skillfully blend humor, tension, and a level of grisly brutality rarely seen in contemporary mainstream horror films.
As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but feel excited about “The Monkey” being on course to be the first genuine horror blockbuster of the year! For those fortunate enough to catch it at AMC theaters, you’re in for an even more chilling experience with its eerie popcorn bucket. Keep an eye out for its nationwide release on Feb 21, courtesy of Neon, and don’t miss the mind-blowing trailer below!
