‘American Dad!’ Closing in on Deal to Return to Fox

Fox is considering reviving an old animated series as part of expanding its cartoon programming.

As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share the exciting news that it appears the broadcaster is on the verge of sealing a contract with 20th Television Animation, the brilliant minds behind “American Dad!”. If all goes as planned, this iconic show will make its grand return to our screens. Created by the talented trio Seth MacFarlane, Mike Barker, and Matt Weitzman, “American Dad!” initially graced Fox, before transitioning to TBS in 2014. Over the past 10 seasons, it has produced over 200 episodes, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for this beloved animated series!

Fox declined comment.

The current two-seasons of the show that began in 2021 on TBS will conclude with Monday’s season finale. If the deal with Fox is finalized, it may lead to a multi-season arrangement, enabling the series to smoothly move to providing new episodes at its potential and future home.

The comeback of “American Dad!” on Fox was significantly influenced by their renewed streaming agreement with Hulu, which took place in November 2024. This contract enables in-season episodes of Fox series to be streamed on Hulu – a platform that falls under Disney’s ownership, along with 20th TV Animation – the day after they air on television. Additionally, Hulu houses the archive of “American Dad!” (with nearly 390 episodes), and it is one of the streamer’s most-watched shows.

The prospective comeback of “American Dad!” on Fox could signal a positive outlook for 20th TV Animation’s other long-running shows airing on Fox, such as “Bob’s Burgers,” Seth MacFarlane’s “Family Guy,” and “The Simpsons.” These shows are nearing the end of their two-season deals with the network, but Fox has yet to disclose its plans regarding their future.

In the animated series titled “American Dad!“, actors such as Wendy Schaal, Rachael MacFarlane, Scott Grimes, Dee Bradley Baker, and of course, Seth MacFarlane himself take center stage. Weitzman and Brian Boyle share the role of co-showrunners while also serving as executive producers, with Seth MacFarlane taking on that position as well.

Deadline first reported the potential Fox deal.
