As a long-time member and dedicated supporter of the American Federation of Musicians (AFM), I am thrilled to see the union endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris for president. Her commitment to labor rights and her unwavering support from President Biden make her an ideal candidate for musicians concerned about protecting our rights, securing fair pay, benefits, and retirement.
Vice President Kamala Harris has received the support of the American Federation of Musicians, which is based in the US and Canada, in her presidential campaign.
The support of the union is given following a unanimous decision by the American representatives on the International Board of AFM, who view the current Biden-Harris administration as labor-friendly. This alignment comes after President Biden chose not to run for re-election and endorsed Harris instead.
In New York City, the musical union caters to the professional needs of instrumentalists. This includes those performing in orchestras, bands, nightclubs, and theaters, as well as those involved in film scoring, television productions, commercial jingles, and soundtrack recordings.
“The Federation stands together with every American advocating for a united country that fosters acceptance, progress, and values all its residents. We endorse Kamala Harris as the next President of the United States, proudly supported by the AFM. For musicians seeking to safeguard their intellectual and labor rights, secure fair compensation, benefits, and retirement plans, Harris is the undisputed candidate.” – Tino Gagliardi, AFM International President.
Approximately 170,000 members strong in the Hollywood and entertainment industry, IATSE (International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees) voiced their support for Harris on Monday. Additionally, The AFL-CIO (Federation of Labor Councils), an umbrella organization comprised of around 60 unions such as Actors Equity, SAG-AFTRA, Writers Guild of America East, American Federation of Musicians, and IATSE, publicly endorsed Harris. Nevertheless, some individual entertainment unions have yet to announce their endorsements for Harris.
