As a longtime gamer who’s also a TV enthusiast with a soft spot for reality shows and talent competitions like American Idol, I must say I’m quite intrigued by ABC’s decision to air a sneak peek of the show following this year’s Oscars.
ABC will once again use the Oscars to give a platform to one of its regular series.
I’m thrilled to share some exciting news! As a die-hard fan, I can’t contain my excitement about the sneak peek of “American Idol” that’s been scheduled to air after the Academy Awards on March 2nd. This is a whole week before the show officially kicks off its new season on March 9th! The preview will air at 10:30 p.m. ET, or 7:30 p.m. PT, right after the live Oscar telecast. Can’t wait to see what they have in store for us!
The preview won’t be an entire show like Idol, which typically lasts two hours. Instead, it will offer viewers a sneak peek at new judge Carrie Underwood – whose season four win on Idol marked the beginning of her music career – and some auditions from the initial stages of the competition, all within a half-hour timeframe.
Underwood assumes the judge’s position previously held by Katy Perry, who exited ‘Idol’ at the conclusion of the last season following seven years (the show’s entire tenure on ABC until then). Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie are coming back as judges, while Ryan Seacrest remains as host.
It turns out that Underwood will be performing on ABC’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve as well. He’ll take the stage right before the Times Square ball drops at midnight. Other artists scheduled for the event include Megan Moroney, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Lenny Kravitz, Teddy Swims, Tinashe, Cody Johnson, and Thomas Rhett.
In 2025, ABC is set to commence its Oscar broadcast at 7 p.m. Eastern Time/4 p.m. Pacific Time. This timing accommodates the entire show within prime-time hours, ensuring there’s still space for a preview of Idol before local news broadcasts across much of the country. Additionally, the network plans to rebroadcast the awards during prime-time for stations in the Pacific time zone.
In March, Abbott Elementary, which was aired by ABC, managed to attract a significant number of viewers after the Oscars. Notably, it garnered 6.9 million viewers, marking its highest single-day viewership ever and surpassing its season average by more than double.
