As a fervent admirer of captivating storytelling that delves into the complexities of human nature, I can hardly contain my excitement for “American Sports Story”, the latest addition to Ryan Murphy’s intriguing anthology franchise. The teaser for this upcoming series promises an enthralling exploration of Aaron Hernandez’s life, a tale that spans from NFL stardom to convicted murderer.
The life story of Aaron Hernandez, who transitioned from a professional NFL player to a convicted murderer, is now dramatized in the newest addition to Ryan Murphy’s American Story series, titled American Sports Story. A preview for this program was first released on Wednesday.
In the FX series debuting on September 17th, Josh Andrés Rivera portrays Hernandez, a character grappling with his dark impulses. “You can’t imagine the thoughts that cross my mind,” he confesses. “It feels like a demon haunting me. What if I was created this way by God?”
People who are close to the athlete, including his family members, caution him about his unrestrained impulses due to his newfound public status. “Aaron,” they say, “You can’t afford to make mistakes.” Additionally, he’s advised, “Your drug use, your sexual behaviors, and your anger – it’s not just your athletic skills that are being scrutinized, Aaron. It’s your character that’s under examination.”
Apart from Rivera, the show features Patrick Schwarzenegger as Tim Tebow, Norbert Leo Butz portraying New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick. The series is overseen by Ryan Murphy, Stuart Zicherman, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Alexis Martin Woodall, Eric Kovtun, Scott Robertson and Carl Franklin. This first episode of the new anthology series is additionally executive produced by Wondery’s Hernan Lopez and Marshall Lewy, as well as Linda Pizzuti Henry and Ira Napoliello from The Boston Globe. The concept for this production is based on the podcast “Gladiator: Aaron Hernandez and Football Inc.” which was jointly created by The Boston Globe and Wondery.
2021’s release, titled “A Modern Perspective on American Sports,” intends to scrutinize a significant sports incident featuring a notable figure by viewing it through contemporary lenses. The narrative will offer diverse viewpoints on this event.
In the 2023 incident where football player Odin Lloyd was fatally shot, Hernandez was found guilty and given a life sentence without parole. This tragedy occurred because Lloyd was the boyfriend of Hernandez’s fiancée’s sister. Previously, in the 2012 shootings that resulted in the deaths of Safiro Furtado and Daniel de Abreu, Hernandez stood trial but was found not guilty.
After being cleared of the murders of Furtado and de Abreu during a 2017 trial, Hernandez took his own life by hanging in his jail cell only a few days later. This tragic event is now remembered as one of the most infamous incidents in NFL history.
