As a gamer who’s spent countless hours playing country music-themed games like Nashville On The Move and Ranch Rush, I found myself reminiscing about my virtual days as a country star while watching The Reklaws on America’s Got Talent (AGT). Their performance of “Long Live the Night” brought me back to the days when I was belting out tunes in front of virtual audiences, hoping to make it big just like Drake Milligan did on AGT Season 17.
Spoilers ahead for the third week of AGT quarterfinals.
In the heat of America’s Got Talent Season 19, on August 27th, the quarterfinals rolled on, and another group of contenders took the stage to shine live. Some, like the captivating vocalist Dee Dee Simon, left the judges spellbound just as before, while others seemed to pale in comparison to their initial auditions. The Reklaws made a comeback for another swing at the grand prize, and now their destiny lies with the voters. As I watched them perform their fresh original number, it reminded me of Drake Milligan who charmed countless viewers during America’s Got Talent Season 17. However, as I ponder over it, I find myself questioning if that comparison is a positive thing.
Initially, it wasn’t clear to me why The Reklaws seemed so similar to Drake Milligan beyond the fact that Stuart and Milligan physically resemble each other. Since The Reklaws are a duo who perform together, while Milligan sang solo in front of a band, I couldn’t pinpoint the connection. However, as the Reklaws performed their original song “Long Live the Night,” live, I felt compelled to go back and watch one of Milligan’s early performances. Here’s the latest from The Reklaws:
In simpler terms, I believe the audio quality during the live shows of Season 19 on America’s Got Talent wasn’t as good as it was for Drake Milligan in the past. However, I don’t blame The Reklaws at all for this. As a fan of country music acts on AGT, and not much else, my impression is that both The Reklaws and Drake Milligan are artists who engage the audience effectively to create energy.
However, upon revisiting Drake Milligan’s rendition of “Sounds Like Something I’d Do” from Season 17, I found myself regretting the decision. This is because my preference leans more towards Milligan compared to The Reklaws. Give it a look:
As a devoted fan, I yearned to revisit Milligan’s live quarterfinals show to ensure a balanced comparison with The Reklaws. Sadly, it seems that performance is nowhere to be found on YouTube or even with a Peacock Premium subscription. Reminiscing back to 2022, his audition was nothing short of spectacular, leaving Simon Cowell stunned and expressing disbelief that Milligan didn’t simply capitalize on the fame and abandon the competition. Interestingly, he opted for “Sounds Like Something I’d Do” during the live finale, choosing to stick with his original selection instead of switching to a different song.
Opinions can vary greatly as to who gave a better performance on America’s Got Talent between The Reklaws and Drake Milligan. As someone who isn’t deeply versed in country music, I can say that die-hard fans of the genre might have a deeper understanding. Watching The Reklaws reminded me to revisit a performer whose act on AGT I found more appealing, which could be seen as neither beneficial nor detrimental for them. It’s also worth mentioning that while Milligan was quite popular during Season 17, he ended up placing third behind Kristy Sellars (pole dancer) and Mayyas (dance group). Additionally, his comeback in AGT: Fantasy League wasn’t successful when he opted to cover a song instead of performing an original piece.
In essence, the outcome for The Reklaws in America’s Got Talent Season 19 hinges on the audience’s preference for them over the other contenders, and if they progress, it seems wise to focus on original songs rather than covers. If you wish to support The Reklaws or any of the quarterfinalists from the recent round, you can cast your vote using the AGT app or the official website before 7 a.m. ET on August 28.
