Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Andor season 2, episodes 7-9
The second season of “Andor” has intensified a shift in the “Star Wars” universe’s established norms, as seen in its recent episodes. Unlike most “Star Wars” productions, where fictional curses are used instead of real-world expletives, “Andor” has broken this pattern by introducing one such explicit term.
In the final episode of season 1 of Andor, it was widely known that Maarva Andor’s posthumous holo-message to the people of Ferrix was initially intended to conclude with an impassioned exclamation of, “Curse The Empire!”. Though the prospect of the first expletive in Star Wars history was undeniably thrilling, the offensive term was swapped out for a call to “fight” instead.
However, it’s worth noting that Andor season 1 did include real-world profanity in other instances, and now, Andor season 2 has solidified this significant change in canon with a fresh scene.
Andor Season 1 DID Introduce Earth Swear Words
Andor Season 1, Episode 3
Although Maarva didn’t get her planned moment in the series as initially planned, Andor’s first season, particularly episode 3, included genuine profanity elsewhere. In the midst of the turmoil on Ferrix during Cassian Andor’s escape with Luthen Rael in season 1, episode 3 of Andor, Syril Karn’s second-in-command was heard over the radio, struggling to locate where their CorpSec forces were being assaulted. This led to the use of the term “darn” or a similar colloquial expression.
Previously, instances of explicit language in the Star Wars universe were very scarce, as most swear words were unique to its fictional world such as “poodoo”, “dank ferrik”, “sleemo” and “kriff”. Words like “hell” or even “a” were rarely used. However, episode 3 of the first season of Andor marked a significant shift by introducing the use of the word “s” for the first time in the Star Wars canon.
Andor Season 2 Just Doubled Down On Earth Swear Words In A Stunning Scene
Just Before Mon Mothma’s Impressive Imperial Senate Speech
Remarkably, Andor season 2 reinforces its impact on Star Wars lore by revisiting a significant theme once more. In episode 9 of Andor, Mon Mothma, in her final address to the Imperial Senate prior to fleeing Coruscant, publicly condemns Emperor Palpatine as a beast responsible for the horrific acts of the Empire, specifically referencing the Ghorman Massacre.
With backing and motivation from Senator Bail Organa, who himself was a covert leader within the Rebellion, Bail advises Mon to “wreak havoc” right before the meeting commences. This moment carries great impact, as it underscores the courage Mon demonstrates by delivering such a harsh speech. It should be noted that Montha Mothma well understood the danger in speaking out so boldly, for doing so would make her a target for death by every Imperial while she delivered it within the core of the Galactic Empire itself.
Why Andor Has Continued To Use Real-World Swear Words
Maintaining The Show’s Grounded Realism
Historically, the Star Wars franchise typically swaps out actual curse words with its own alternatives. Yet, this approach wouldn’t align with the overall mood and visual style of Andor. These substitutions are frequently used for humor, which can disrupt the general sense of realism. In contrast to most Star Wars productions, Andor aims to create a sense of authenticity within the Star Wars universe. Consequently, employing genuine curse words such as “s” helps reinforce this grounded and realistic atmosphere in the show.
