Some may argue that “Andor” deviates from the original ethos of Star Wars, but to me, it stands as one of the most triumphant achievements from Lucasfilm under Disney’s reign so far.

After wrapping up in two seasons, it’s expected that Lucasfilm will attempt to recreate the series’ success in some form. This could involve creating more mature Star Wars stories or delving deeper into characters from Andor. Since Andor featured numerous intriguing new characters like Bix Caleen and Wilmon Paak who survived the series, there may be potential for their stories to continue. If Lucasfilm is considering an Andor spin-off following its impressive run, then there’s a standout character that could be the focus.

Mon Mothma Was a Major Part and Breakout Star of Andor

As a devoted cinephile, I must say that while “Andor” predominantly traced Cassian’s journey within the Rebel Alliance, it also spotlighted several key characters, among them Mon Mothma. Her narrative paralleled Cassian’s significantly in the ninth episode of season two, following a daring rescue operation after she delivered a speech in the senate denouncing Emperor Palpatine. Throughout the series, Mothma’s tale was equally captivating as Cassian’s, providing an alternative perspective on the Rebel Alliance’s early days and formation.

As a movie enthusiast, I found myself captivated by Mon Mothma’s journey in the series “Andor.” Instead of embarking on pulse-pounding missions like Cassian, she skillfully navigated the labyrinthine politics of the galaxy. Her quest was to covertly persuade others to back her cause and strike deals that would bring about change. What made Mon Mothma’s story particularly gripping was how it shed light on the grassroots beginnings of a Rebel Alliance, a crucial movement that took shape amidst the ominous rise of fascism at its zenith.

Geneiveve O’Reilly’s portrayal of Mothma was nothing short of remarkable, and her character stood out as one of the most compelling in the series, with sharp dialogues that were undoubtedly the wisest in the entire franchise. Given how Mon Mothma emerged as a surprising yet captivating figure in “Andor,” it seems only fitting for Lucasfilm to delve deeper into her story, as we know there’s much more to uncover.

Mon Mothma Doesn’t Appear Until Return of the Jedi in the Original Trilogy

In essence, a standalone film could finally unravel the tale of Mothma’s involvement during the Galactic Civil War. Similar to ‘Andor’, her narrative could also intertwine with another character from the saga, perhaps Wilmon, or an entirely new character. Many fans are eagerly waiting to find out how the Bothans discovered the Death Star II, and Mothma’s continuing storyline could effortlessly contribute to this plotline.

I want to acknowledge Tony Gilroy for creating complex female characters in our show. With numerous actresses portraying these roles across Seasons 1 and 2, we aren’t just playing women; we’re embodying them. Mon Mothma is a multifaceted character who represents motherhood, marriage, politics, threat, and alliance – she’s more than one thing. This allows each actress to bring her own unique depth to the female characters. It makes the show compelling because it shows real people, not stereotypes. The key isn’t magic; it’s simply writing realistic characters.

However, what stands out most is that O’Reilly’s portrayals of Mothma suggest a willingness to reprise the role, regardless of who writes it other than Tony Gilroy. Although the dialogue might not be as crisp, there are still numerous avenues for Lucasfilm to delve into the character. Mothma has long been a significant figure in the Star Wars universe as the leader of the Rebel Alliance. However, it was the series Andor that significantly boosted her stature. Post Andor, Mothma is among the few characters from the original trilogy for which Lucasfilm would have no reservations about further developing. O’Reilly has now solidified herself as this era’s embodiment of the character, similar to how Ewan McGregor endeared himself as Obi-Wan before his standalone films.

There were numerous elements that made “Andor” such an outstanding series. Mon Mothma’s character development, where she evolved into one of the Rebel Alliance’s founders, was particularly noteworthy. Given the success of “Andor“, it’s clear that Lucasfilm will be seeking ways to replicate its momentum in future stories. With Cassian’s story coming to an end in “Rogue One“, Lucasfilm might need to focus on another character if they wish to create a spin-off series.

Among all the potential characters Lucasfilm could focus on, Mon Mothma stands out as the most compelling choice, given her significant role in the “Andor” series and the untold stories that await. A Mon Mothma-centric series could delve into the political intricacies of the Galactic Civil War hinted at in the original trilogy, finally offering fans a long-awaited glimpse since 1983. If Star Wars history has taught us anything, it’s that anything is possible. However, a Mon Mothma spin-off seems improbable at this point. Yet, should another “Andor” writer decide to craft a new tale for her, it would still be a daunting task to replicate the quality of “Andor.” If Mon Mothma’s story doesn’t continue in a single live-action series, it will certainly unfold in future canon publications, now that she’s more significant within the Star Wars franchise than ever, with endless potential for further exploration.
