Andrea Mitchell to Leave MSNBC Anchor Chair for Broader Role at NBC News

As a seasoned gamer who has clocked countless hours navigating virtual worlds, I can’t help but draw parallels to Andrea Mitchell‘s storied career in journalism. Her dedication, her grit, and her unwavering commitment to truth are reminiscent of the epic quests I embark on in games like The Witcher or Elder Scrolls.

Longtime MSNBC host Andrea Mitchell will move away from her daily hosting duties to take on a more expansive position within NBC News, as per an announcement made on Tuesday.

Andrea Mitchell announced her departure from the Andrea Mitchell Reports, which began in 2008, both on-air and through an internal memo from the NBC News Group. In essence, she revealed that following the inauguration in January, she will be transitioning away from her daily hosting responsibilities for the Andrea Mitchell Reports on MSNBC to take on a more expansive role within the NBCU News Group. This was confirmed by a memo, which was signed by Rashida Jones, Rebecca Blumenstein, Janelle Rodriguez, and Libby Leist.

As I, a seasoned gamer and also an esteemed journalist covering U.S. Presidential elections for NBC News since the ’80s, I’m excited to announce that I’ll keep my role as a key reporter at this prestigious network. I’ll continue serving as the Chief Washington Correspondent and Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent, ready to bring you the latest news from both domestic and international fronts. Game on!

Following her latest job, Mitchell will share updates on NBC News’ primary news programs, NBC News NOW streaming network, NBCNews.com, and MSNBC.

After spending sixteen years anchoring every day, I’m eager for more opportunities to connect, listen, and report from the field,” Mitchell shared with her MSNBC audience on Tuesday, as she announced her plan to step down by early 2025. This is because the individual taking office next week will be faced with a significant challenge of managing two ongoing foreign wars and resolving domestic political divisions.

Team,

Andrea Mitchell recently announced that following the inauguration in January, she will be moving away from her daily hosting responsibilities for “Andrea Mitchell Reports” on MSNBC to take on a wider role within NBCU News Group. Although she is stepping down as the host of her show, Andrea will remain as NBC News’ Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent and Chief Washington Correspondent. This means viewers can still expect to see her during significant breaking news events, major political nights like election nights, and other important occasions. Her reporting will continue to be featured on popular NBC News programs such as TODAY, Nightly News, Meet the Press, NBC News NOW, NBCNews.com, MSNBC, and various innovative projects we are working on.

2008 saw the birth of “Andrea Mitchell Reports,” MSNBC’s longest-running daytime program that has served as the blueprint for their successful “Reports” and daytime programming. Over the past 14 years, Andrea’s insightful interviews have consistently shaped both national and international news agendas. As one of the country’s leading authorities on foreign policy and domestic politics, her extensive network of sources and knack for securing high-profile, newsworthy interviews are unparalleled. The invaluable impact Andrea has made at NBC News over the past 46 years is truly remarkable, and we couldn’t be happier to have her as an integral part of our News Group for many more years.

She has covered every presidential election for NBC News since 1980, including more than a dozen campaigns and seven administrations. She has reported from North Korea, Cuba, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Israel, the West Bank, Ukraine, Bosnia, Kosovo, Pakistan, Haiti, Sudan, Japan, and many more countries around the world. Her trailblazing reporting is why Glamour Magazine said, “Andrea Mitchell is Washington’s most resilient institution,” and why Town & Country Magazine wrote in 2023, “Americans have turned to a woman who has been a cornerstone of broadcast journalism for nearly half a century: Andrea Mitchell.”

As we get ready to report on a fresh administration, Andrea’s skills and journalistic abilities are indispensable now more than ever. Let us express our congratulations to Andrea on completing 16 years at the anchor desk at MSNBC and for her ongoing contributions with NBC News as we gear up to cover this groundbreaking election.

Allow me to share a more conversational version:

After spending sixteen years anchoring every day, I’m looking forward to dedicating more time to my passions: connecting with people, listening, and reporting from the field. With the upcoming election, the next administration will face significant challenges such as managing two foreign wars and addressing domestic political divisions. Therefore, following the inauguration in January, I have requested the chance to continue covering these important stories, but from a different perspective – remaining with NBC News and MSNBC, and still serving as the chief Washington and foreign affairs correspondent. However, I won’t be tied to a daily show schedule anymore.

My aim remains consistent, as it has been since day one, to deliver the significant figures influencing our nation and global landscape directly to you, our audience, right here on MSNBC. I’ve had the privilege of accompanying you through coverage of presidential conferences, and even traveled alongside U.S. Secretaries of State to destinations such as Russia, Ukraine, North Korea, Japan, China, Israel, the West Bank, Jordan, Chad, Cuba, Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, and Afghanistan – just a few of the numerous locations I’ve visited worldwide.

As I venture through various parts of the world, including across the United States, what truly excites me is connecting with people – connecting with our audience – connecting with you. I particularly enjoy learning about your personal experiences and finding ways to keep you updated on our political leaders, as well as our partners and opponents worldwide. Thus, in the coming year, you can expect to find me in your homes, on your devices, and on various platforms – and maybe even in your hometowns and cities, continuing to ask questions that will provide the insights you require.

Over the next seven days, we’re all working hard to bring you updates on the final stages of the election, followed by a presidential transition, and eventually the start of a new administration. I can’t wait to keep you informed after the inauguration and continue providing my coverage in fresh formats, exclusively here on NBC News and MSNBC for many years ahead.
