As a longtime enthusiast of musical adaptations, I must admit that my heart skips a beat at the thought of losing another one from my collection. But alas, the 2019 cinematic interpretation of Andrew Lloyd Webber‘s classic, “Cats,” is about to depart from Netflix.
Warning everyone, a movie often labeled as one of the worst films ever made will be departing from Netflix in January. This means you’ll want to seize the opportunity to reexperience the enchantment of a particular production based on an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, which includes Taylor Swift among its talented cast members. So, let’s boost those streaming numbers before this catastrophe can no longer be viewed, appreciated, and analyzed on their platform.
It’s regrettable to share this news, but the 2019 film adaptation of the musical is set to depart from Netflix in the near future. This year has been remarkable for musicals, with Wicked – Part One breaking box office records. In contrast, the big screen version of this Broadway adaptation didn’t fare well in 2019. Some may find appeal in the controversial CGI cat effects of Cats, whether it’s from those who find them intriguing or from those yet to see it. All opinions will be welcomed and valued.
The movie “Cats” is adapted from a 1981 musical of the same name, which in turn was inspired by the 1939 poetry collection “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats” by T.S. Eliot. Directed by Tom Hooper and written by Hooper and Lee Hall, the film focuses on a group of cats called Jellicles who must choose annually which one will journey to the Heavenside Layer and reincarnate into a new Jellicle life. The star-studded cast includes Judi Dench, James Corden, Jason Derulo, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Ian McKellen, Taylor Swift, Rebel Wilson, and Francesca Hayward.
Cats Was Quickly Ripped Apart by Critics And Moviegoers
Given Hooper’s successful adaptation of Les Misérables, which garnered positive reviews, multiple Academy Award nominations, and a massive box office gross of $442.8 million, it was expected that Cats could have been a promising film. However, the opposite turned out to be true as Cats became a significant disappointment, both critically and financially. The movie received a poor 19% score on Rotten Tomatoes with critics summarizing it as, “Despite its star-studded cast, this Cats adaptation is a regrettable mistake that will leave most viewers longing for relief from their cinematic torment.
The film garnered multiple Razzie nominations and ultimately won Worst Picture of the Year. Even Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber voiced his disapproval, commenting, “‘The issue with the movie was that Tom Hooper opted to exclude anyone involved in the original production.’
Despite an ideal December release, which often boosts box office earnings for movies, the film “Cats” underperformed significantly. It earned $27.2 million domestically and $74.6 million globally, while its production budget was $95 million. Universal Pictures reportedly incurred a loss of $113.6 million on this project. It seems they might have benefited from heeding Lloyd Webber’s advice: “You’re heading towards a car crash unless you take control of this situation.
Cats is still available to stream on Netflix until January, so get those watches in while you can!
