Andrew Scott to Star in One-Man ‘Vanya’ Off-Broadway

As a theater enthusiast with a penchant for the dramatic and a soft spot for Chekhov, I couldn’t be more thrilled about Andrew Scott bringing his one-man show of Uncle Vanya Off-Broadway this spring! Having seen Scott’s mesmerizing performances in Fleabag, Ripley, Hamlet, and Sea Wall, I have no doubt that he will breathe life into every character in this classic play.

Andrew Scott will bring his one-man show of Uncle Vanya Off-Broadway this spring.

For the first time on an American stage, the iconic Chekhov play will feature Scott performing all characters, following its successful West End debut in 2023 and a recorded live performance. After making waves in London, this production is now set to make its New York debut.

The show kicks off on March 11, 2025, at the Lucille Lortel Theatre. Opening night will be held on March 18. This production has been scheduled for an eight-week period.

Scott collaborated with Simon Stephens in adapting Chekhov’s work (specifically, “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time”), along with designer Rosanna Vize and director Sam Yates. This play features eight characters, and tells the story of an older professor and his younger wife who visit a rural estate managed by family members named Vanya and Sonya. Astrov, the local doctor, often drops by. As romantic entanglements unfold, conflicts escalate when the professor expresses his desire to sell the estate that has supported his lifestyle for years.

Scott expressed his deep affection for this remarkable play. He admires the poignant, funny, seductive characters it presents. He cherishes the team he worked with to produce this show. His fondness extends to New York City itself. Therefore, he’s incredibly excited to share Vanya with audiences at the Lortel Theatre.

Recently, a second adaptation of “Uncle Vanya” has graced New York stages, following the conclusion of the Lincoln Center’s Broadway revival featuring Steve Carrell and William Jackson Harper in June.

Scott is recognized for playing leading roles in shows like Fleabag, Ripley, and more, but he’s also graced stages such as the West End with his performances in Hamlet and Sea Wall. Additionally, he made a Broadway appearance back in 2006 during The Vertical Hour production.

The production of this run is being handled by Wessex Grove, Gavin Kalin Productions, and Kater Gordon, with Wagner Johnson Productions serving as executive producers.

This joins a lineup of popular productions that have graced the Lucille Lortel Theatre in Manhattan’s West Village. At present, the theater is hosting “Hold On To Me Darling,” featuring Adam Driver, following successful runs of “Oh Mary!” and “Danny and the Deep Blue Sea,” which starred Aubrey Plaza and Christopher Abbott.
