Angela Bassett is reflecting on the unique responses she encountered when she didn’t win the 2023 Oscar, which went to Jamie Lee Curtis instead.
During an interview with Town and Country, the actress spoke more about not receiving the Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 2023, despite her nomination for her role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. This nomination was actually her second, following her earlier nomination for Best Actress for What’s Love Got to Do With It back in 1994.
She commented that she found it intriguing, reflecting on the situation. Specifically, she found it peculiar that she wasn’t permitted to feel upset about an outcome she believed she deserved.
In the nominations for their respective roles, Bassett was nominated as Queen Ramonda, whereas Curtis was both nominated and won for her portrayal of IRS agent Deirdre Beaubeirdre in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.
During that moment, spectators swiftly noticed the disappointed expression on Bassett’s face as Curtis’ name was announced. This gloomy facial expression of hers even spread online and became a popular meme.
Bassett expressed her affection for acknowledging others. However, in that instance, she paused and shared her feelings of believing she had done enough work to receive recognition, later clarifying.
I didn’t consider it a gift; rather, I saw it as something I had to invest effort into over time – putting in the time and doing quality work.
On multiple occasions, the actress who played Zero Day in a movie has openly shared her thoughts on not receiving an Oscar. During a conversation with Oprah Winfrey in 2024, she expressed that, regardless of any negative comments, she felt she managed the loss admirably.
She acknowledged that it was a significant letdown, and everyone experiences such feelings. She put it simply: ‘I felt disappointed, just like any other person would.’ Later, she added, ‘Life will bring us moments of disappointment, but how we respond in those situations defines us. So, we’ll maintain our composure, show kindness, be courteous, and celebrate life – however that may look.’
Although I didn’t win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress that year, the next year, the Academy graciously awarded me with an Honorary Oscar at the Governor Awards. It was truly a humbling and memorable experience.
Bassett emphasized during his honorary Oscar acceptance speech that he didn’t consider this achievement as something given; rather, he believed he deserved it due to all the effort he put into earning it.
Bassett next stars alongside Robert De Niro in Netflix’s political thriller Zero Day.
