As someone who cherishes both art and history, I must say that experiencing Anish Kapoor’s ‘Monadic Singularity’ exhibition at Liverpool Cathedral has been nothing short of breathtaking. Having visited the cathedral 40 years ago during my student days, it was a profound moment to return and witness such a magnificent display of contemporary art against the backdrop of this historic structure.
40 years later, Anish Kapoor comes back to Liverpool, bringing along ‘Monadic Singularity’ – a complimentary and free exhibition marking the Liverpool Cathedral’s 100th anniversary. Over two and a half decades of Kapoor’s masterpieces are showcased in this event, with the United Kingdom premier of his grand sculpture ‘Sectional Body Preparing for Monadic Singularity’ (2015) making its debut as well.
Despite not being the oldest, Liverpool Cathedral stands out as the U.K.’s largest and it ranks eighth in size globally. The cathedral has been venturing into art exhibitions, but “Monadic Singularity,” a collaboration between Culture Liverpool and Lisson Gallery, represents its most ambitious endeavor yet. Paul Smith, Director of Enterprise, views this as an opportunity to enhance the cultural experiences provided by the cathedral and express gratitude towards its visitors.
Kapoor’s artworks delve into the connection between tangible and intangible realms, mirroring the Gothic design and sacred motifs of a cathedral, such as those concerning life stages like birth, union, and demise. The main exhibit includes ‘Untitled’ (2010), while works such as ‘Imminence’ (2000) are displayed in the Lady Chapel.
As I, the eager gamer, delve into the immersive world of ‘Monadic Singularity’, I’m reminded that this digital journey continues until September 15. This is a prelude to Anish Kapoor’s delayed exhibition in Minneapolis, which promises an equally captivating experience. In the meantime, the grand Liverpool Cathedral extends an invitation for me and fellow enthusiasts. They offer extended hours, guided tours, and delightful refreshments, making my visit during the show’s run a truly enriching experience.
