Annapurna Interactive Video Game Staff Resigns (Report)

As a passionate gamer and follower of the indie gaming scene, I must say the recent events at Annapurna Interactive have left me quite intrigued. It’s like watching a rollercoaster ride from a comfortable distance – exhilarating yet uncertain! The resignation of the entire staff under the video game division seems to be a significant shakeup, but then again, change can often bring about new opportunities and innovative ideas.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve learned that the whole team over at Annapurna Interactive, the video game arm of Megan Ellison’s Annapurna, seems to have stepped down, as per a report from Bloomberg, based on several reliable sources. Unfortunately, there’s been no official response from the company regarding this matter.

September 6th marked the announcement by Annapurna that its President, Nathan Gary, who additionally managed their video game operations, would be departing along with co-heads Deborah Mars and Nathan Vell from the independent gaming department. Recent reports from Bloomberg indicate that Gary and the team of approximately 25 staff members within the gaming division resigned following failed negotiations to separate the video game division as a standalone entity from the larger company.

Hector Sanchez, co-founder of Annapurna Interactive, previously worked at Epic Games as their president for interactive media, and will now lead Annapurna’s gaming projects. Today’s announcement has raised some worry among Annapurna’s game development collaborators due to recent departures.

Ever since debuting in the indie gaming scene in 2016, Annapurna has climbed the ranks, earning critical acclaim for its indie games such as ‘What Remains of Edith Finch’ and ‘Stray’. The latter was a massive success, selling millions of copies within its first month and winning an award equivalent to an Oscar in 2022. Despite facing financial struggles in 2019 and 2020, Annapurna reduced its film production activities but still managed to release more critically-acclaimed indie games like ‘Cocoon’ and ‘Outer Wilds’.

Annapurna is set to return to cinemas with Marielle Heller’s eagerly awaited horror comedy, “Nightbitch,” starring Amy Adams. This film made its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. The company has also debuted Netflix’s animated feature “Nimona” and the Amazon-based animated TV series “Sausage Party: Foodtopia.
