As a seasoned theme park enthusiast, I’ve had my fair share of wardrobe mishaps and unexpected run-ins with dress codes. I’ve been that tourist who got drenched in the rain at Universal Orlando while wearing inappropriate footwear, and I’ve also had the embarrassment of being turned away from a park because my outfit didn’t meet their standards.
Choosing your outfit for a day at a theme park is an important choice. It should be comfortable considering the weather you’ll encounter throughout the day, as I’ve learned from my experience getting wet in the rain at Universal Orlando while wearing inappropriate clothes. At the same time, you want to look presentable since many people will see you, even though they might be strangers you won’t interact with. However, it’s also crucial that your attire meets the park’s dress code, as places like Disney World and Universal Orlando regularly enforce such rules.
It’s often the case for individuals who are deemed inappropriately dressed to take their concerns to social media platforms. Interestingly, it’s frequently Walt Disney World that experiences a high number of dress code violations, but today, a viral TikTok video originates from Universal Orlando. The incident involves a mother who had her shirt removed at the security checkpoint.

The video demonstrates a woman layering a sweatshirt over her “Women don’t owe you shit” t-shirt, but in her social media post, she alleges that Universal Orlando confiscated her shirt and insisted she hide it instead of letting her continue wearing it. It seems like they offered her the chance to return the shirt to her car or hotel, but given the circumstances, it’s understandable she didn’t want to make the trip.
At Universal Orlando, it’s not common for such events to occur, but we’ve had our fair share of incidents similar to those that frequently happen at Walt Disney World. Recently, there has been an unusual spike in issues, as some guests seem to view a dress code violation as a clever trick to obtain free merchandise. In these instances, Cast Members would often provide the offending party with a replacement shirt instead of allowing them to wear their original clothing that didn’t meet the dress code requirements.
In some instances, it’s optional but not mandatory; Cast members are given the liberty to act upon it. If they notice a guest appearing unhappy, they possess the means to resolve issues, sometimes involving spending money. A Cast Member can decline entry into the park if they feel a guest’s attire is inappropriate or offensive. We’ve noticed that some individuals seeking a free spirit jersey have been denied access.
This wasn’t about someone intentionally seeking a free t-shirt; rather, it seemed they either didn’t realize the t-shirt could cause an issue or simply didn’t consider it as such in this context. To be honest, I wouldn’t have significant concerns about a t-shirt like this in an amusement park, even if my children were to point it out. Frankly, it’s a viewpoint I hope my daughters internalize, but I understand not every parent would share the same perspective.
Remember this as you plan your visit to Epic Universe next year: To ensure a hassle-free experience on your single day at Universal’s latest theme park, be mindful of the dress code to avoid any violations.
