Another Tom Cruise Classic Could Get The Top Gun Maverick Treatment, But I Wonder What It Means For A Couple Other Commitments

As a lifelong Tom Cruise enthusiast who’s been following his career since the days of Risky Business and Top Gun, I can’t help but feel like a kid in a candy store with all these recent developments. The rumors of Days of Thunder 2 sending chills down my spine are not unlike the thrill of a high-speed NASCAR race – exhilarating yet slightly terrifying!

It seems like the 2025 movies were set to be the main focus in the coming years, but out of nowhere, Tom Cruise makes an unexpected announcement that’s as fast-paced as a blur. Although the release date for Mission: Impossible 8 on May 23rd remains unchanged, there are whispers that another one of Cruise’s timeless films might receive the Top Gun: Maverick treatment. This news undeniably gets me pumped, but I can’t help but ponder what this could mean for all the other bold projects that he is currently working on?

Days Of Thunder 2 Has Entered The Chat

It’s been approximately 25 years since Cole Trickle triumphed at the Daytona 500, and it appears that we could soon learn about his activities during this time period. The possibility of a sequel to Days of Thunder, titled Days of Thunder 2, is apparently being discussed between Cruise and his regular studio partner. A source within Paramount Mountain has emerged, speaking to THR, to provide the following update:

He’s talking [to Paramount] about Top Gun and Days of Thunder. It’s going to be what comes together first in terms of a script. It depends on the idea and, ultimately, the script.

Although it’s clear that the sequel to Maverick is being heavily promoted as the studio’s main focus, it’s hard not to speculate that the revival of this Tony Scott-directed film might have sparked in Cruise’s thoughts for a specific reason. Could it be because he has some exclusive information about his previous director Joseph Kosinski’s current collaboration with Brad Pitt? This is just a thought, but it seems plausible given the circumstances.

Given that the trailer for the F1 movie looks just as exciting as Top Gun: Maverick, it seems plausible to me. Yet, with all the automotive action happening, it also highlights other tasks on Tom Cruise’s agenda.

A Potential Days Of Thunder Legacy-quel Joins A Long List Of Tom Cruise Projects

It’s rarely said that Mr. Cruise rests too much since it seems he hardly ever does. This is due to him having numerous significant projects in the pipeline that he’s been developing for years, not including the rumors about a possible Edge of Tomorrow sequel.

Specifically, the ongoing development of “Days of Thunder” leaves us questioning whether Tom Cruise’s space thriller, in collaboration with Elon Musk, remains on the verge of release. Additionally, it’s worth noting that Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s upcoming film, shrouded in mystery, is slated to begin production soon, according to the aforementioned report. Furthermore, Cruise is eager to carry on with the “Mission: Impossible” series, potentially leading to a ninth installment, if not more.

At present, the upcoming Mission: Impossible film that Tom Cruise enthusiasts can eagerly anticipate is Mission: Impossible 8, scheduled for release on May 23rd, 2025.
