Anthony Mackie’s Captain America Controversy: Is This the End of the Franchise?

The buzz around “Captain America: Brave New World” had been toxic … until recently.

In the next installment, Anthony Mackie assumes the lead role previously held by Chris Evans in the role of Captain America. This movie has experienced significant reshooting and also faced negative buzz due to leaked reports about poor performance during test screenings.

Both gave the impression this “Brave New World” would be a “Marvels”-level dud.

In recent weeks, though, the buzz has died down.

The latest trailer for the movie didn’t receive criticism from Comic Con Nation. The storyline featuring the Red Hulk is piquing the interest of comic book enthusiasts, given that renowned actor Harrison Ford will portray the character.

Actually, certain entertainment news sources predict that the movie might generate over $90 million during its debut weekend. This isn’t quite at “Avengers” level earnings, but it’s a promising sign that the series is not in danger of fading away.

Mackie’s recent slip-up, going viral, seems to have added fuel to the fire. Just how bad is it? We’ll see on February 14, as “Brave New World” premieres in cinemas across the country.

Suffice it to say Disney star Rachel Zegler would be impressed by this PR disaster.

Mackie, who already boasted a strong reputation, faced a challenging task given the big shoes he had to fill initially. Evans’ portrayal of Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was adored by fans, embodying the character’s steadfast leadership.

Some viewers are hesitant about the character change, viewing it as a recent trend of Hollywood embracing progressive ideas. However, this transformation has historical roots in Marvel Comics’ narrative, and Evan’s Captain America handed over his role with dignity in “Avengers: Endgame.

And then Mackie said this about the film and his iconic character.

I feel that Captain America embodies numerous concepts, but not necessarily ‘America’ itself. Instead, he symbolizes a person who is true to his word, upholds honor, maintains dignity, and possesses unwavering integrity.

An old, unspecified video brings to mind Warner Bros.’ approach to the Superman remake. The iconic phrase, “fighting for Truth, Justice, and the American Way,” was trimmed to accommodate more progressive perspectives.

The “revision” sparked a wave of criticism on social media, reflecting the disapproval many fans feel towards the modernized versions of beloved characters.

In 2025, America appears to be moving beyond progressive ideologies, as demonstrated by the re-election of President Donald Trump, symbolizing a shift away from such perspectives.

Now this.

X (AKA Twitter) went berserk with the Mackie clip. Here’s just a sample of the snarkier responses.

The timing isn’t ideal. We’re only about two weeks away from the movie’s premiere, and these memes are likely to stick around for a while.

It’s not great timing. The film is almost ready for release in about two weeks, but these memes might persist.

Last summer, “Deadpool and Wolverine” seemed to rejuvenate the Marvel Cinematic Universe for me. As I eagerly anticipate “Brave New World,” I can’t help but wonder if it will outshine that impressive performance, or if perhaps it will demonstrate that Deadpool was an exception to the general superhero fatigue we’ve been experiencing.
