Anthony Michael Hall Gets Candid About John Hughes And His Brat Pack Era: ‘ I Didn’t Plan On Being Typecast’

For many film enthusiasts, Anthony Michael Hall might evoke memories of a high school geek serving detention alongside other social outcasts, or perhaps they imagine a different nerdy character and his friend designing the perfect woman using science. However, it’s essential to remember that Hall, who was part of the renowned Brat Pack, has taken on numerous diverse roles throughout his career. More recently, this seasoned actor has openly discussed the struggles he faced in moving beyond the characters he portrayed in John Hughes’ films.

At just 56 years old, this actor began his career in Hollywood at a tender age. By the time he turned 17, he had already starred in three iconic ’80s films – “Weird Science”, “16 Candles”, and “The Breakfast Club”. These films were all directed by John Hughes, and Anthony Michael Hall portrayed the humorous yet socially awkward nerd in each. However, as he recounted to Variety, he was unaware that he was being typecast into this role at the time.

I hadn’t intended to be stereotyped, and I don’t believe it was deliberate on John’s part. However, events took a turn, and it seemed that typecasting occurred. As with many young people, there was a sense of self-consciousness, awkwardness, and the intriguing reality that our brains continue to develop until we’re 25. At the time, I was only 17 years old and had already completed a few films. I was essentially winging it, and my actions were driven by a sincere motivation.

Those films significantly boosted the actor’s career during that period, and given his circumstances, he couldn’t refuse them. He leveraged this success to secure a one-year role as a cast member on Saturday Night Live alongside his longtime friend Robert Downey Jr, making him the youngest cast member ever hired for the show. These movies also put him in the company of many promising young actors in Hollywood at the time, and he is still closely associated with the famous Brat Pack group.

In the 1980s, a collective nickname was given to a band of up-and-coming actors who were popular among audiences. They had starred in several teenage drama films within a short span, but the moniker “The Brat Pack” led to various misunderstandings regarding its members, which included Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Ally Sheedy, Andrew McCarthy, and others.

Lately, individuals within our group have expressed diverse emotions about the title and its influence on their professional paths. In fact, it was the focus of a 2024 documentary titled “Brats” directed by Andrew McCarthy. Regardless, Anthony Michael Hall maintains warm sentiments towards that period in his life for several reasons.

As a passionate movie enthusiast, I can’t help but reflect on the profound impact John Hughes had on my journey. His guidance and the treasures he bestowed upon me were invaluable. I wouldn’t be standing where I am today without him. There was an indescribable joy and liberation that surrounded me as a child working alongside him, experiences I will forever cherish.

Actor Johnny Depp declined Andrew McCarthy’s offer to join a project, much like several others. His decision was primarily driven by a desire to advance in his career, while expressing well-wishes to everyone involved. This approach, combined with the challenges of adolescence, eventually allowed him to break free from typecasting and secure more substantial roles in films such as “The Dark Knight”, “Halloween Kills”, and most recently, “Reacher”.

Although he chose not to take part in the documentary, the 56-year-old actor has been reminiscing about his early career days. He can currently be seen in Peacock’s Beyond Saturday Night, a series delving into the history of the late night sketch show. Moreover, he recently joined some of his Breakfast Club co-stars for the film’s 40th Anniversary panel at MegaCon, as reported by People. This leaves room for speculation that he might consider a Brat Pack reunion, an event I’d be thrilled to witness.

Despite my sentimental longing, it’s clear that Anthony Michael Hall is thriving professionally, and I couldn’t be more delighted for him. The iconic movies he was part of from the John Hughes era can be found streaming, purchased or rented across multiple platforms. Don’t forget to catch him in Season 3 of Reacher, available with a Prime subscription.
