As a dedicated admirer of Anurag Kashyap’s cinematic prowess, I find it utterly bewildering that the very same production studios who overlooked the potential of his masterpieces like Gangs of Wasseypur and Mukkabaaz, are now scrambling to release South films in North India. It’s as if they were blind to the obvious all along!
It’s akin to being invited to a grand feast but only being served the leftovers while your neighbors enjoy the main course. The irony is not lost on us, dear studio executives. You see, Anurag Kashyap isn’t just a director; he’s a storyteller who paints vivid pictures of the heart and soul of India. His audience isn’t confined to the four walls of Delhi, Mumbai, Chandigarh, or Hyderabad; it stretches across the length and breadth of this great nation.
And let me tell you a little joke that I think will tickle your funny bone: Why did the studio executive refuse to release Gangs of Wasseypur in North India? Because he thought the Digital Cinema Package cost was too high for a market where they only watch cartoons and fairy tales! Oh, how we laugh at our own folly, don’t we? But remember, laughter is the best medicine for such blindness. Let’s hope that the next dose will cure this strange affliction that’s been plaguing Bollywood for far too long.
Initially known as a screenwriter, Anurag Kashyap transitioned into a successful film director. His two-part movie Gangs of Wasseypur became a sensation among cinephiles. However, despite its popularity, the studio failed to release it in northern regions, labeling themselves as ‘dumb’. In an interview, Kashyap explained that the production company believed his audience was confined to cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Chandigarh, and Hyderabad. Keep reading!
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Anurag Kashyap observed that Bollywood as a whole failed to acknowledge its main audience, thereby allowing South filmmakers to exploit these openings. He provided instances where he discovered his movies, Gangs of Wasseypur and Mukkabaaz, were not screened in Northern India despite having a significant audience base there, during the COVID-19 pandemic.
During a distribution gathering, it was revealed that the production company had determined that his primary viewers were located in Delhi, Mumbai, Chandigarh, and Hyderabad. Consequently, his films produced in the Northern region were not distributed throughout North India. The creators expressed their disbelief with an exclamation of “How shortsighted they are.
Additionally, he mentioned that a theater proprietor from Bihar had implored the film production company to screen the movie in his cinema. Yet, these entreaties went unheeded since the team felt the expense of the Digital Cinema Package was unnecessary for that particular market.
The actor-director explained that while Bollywood produces Hindi films, it has overlooked its own audience. Consequently, Southern movies found a niche and were profitable even after being dubbed. Remarkably, an individual capitalized on this opportunity by launching Goldmines, a YouTube channel where he acquired South films at low costs, dubbed them, and served the Hindi-speaking market. The Bombay Talkies director further commented that the audience’s demand grew so large that a teaser for the upcoming South Indian film, Pushpa 2 was even released in Patna.
In terms of his professional endeavors, Anurag Kashyap recently took on significant roles in the Tamil film “Maharaja” and later starred in “Bad Cop”.
