Anza introduces updates to tackle congestion on Solana network

In version 1.18.11 of Anza’s validator client, new features have been implemented to help alleviate the network congestion problems on Solana.

Validator clients play an essential role in proof-of-stake blockchains like Solana (SOL) and Ethereum (ETH). These tools help validators confirm transactions and maintain network regulations. As reported by Anza’s spokesperson, a forthcoming update is intended to address Solana’s traffic jams.

“The ongoing congestion issues have prompted developers to swiftly take action.”

In addition to improving validator clients, developers are also focusing on other approaches. They are looking into ways to maximize the use of computing units, introducing priority fees to enhance user satisfaction, and working on a system that prioritizes transactions based on stake size.

The main problem behind the challenges on the Solana network is largely attributed to excessive spam transactions. These transactions significantly slow down transaction processing times and raise the risk of dropped transactions. Unlike other networks, Solana handles transactions directly without using a mempool, which exacerbates these issues.

External analyses emphasize Solana’s severe congestion challenges. Reports indicate that a rise in the popularity of Solana meme coins has exacerbated network overload, leading to significant transaction delays and high failure rates.

In reaction, Austin Federa, the Strategist at Solana Foundation, brought up the network’s difficulties on Twitter. Previously, the network had managed to get past comparable hurdles, indicating a resilience towards bouncing back from such incidents.

“Every decision is a series of tradeoffs, sometimes you get it right, sometimes you get it wrong.”

Core team members at Anza, Firedancer, Jito, and other key contributors are putting in long hours (and sacrificing sleep) to strengthen Solana’s networking infrastructure in response to the unprecedented surge in demand the network is currently experiencing. There have been numerous discussions regarding the specific reasons behind this increased pressure on the system.
