As a die-hard football fan with a deep affinity for cutting-edge technology, I can hardly contain my excitement about Apple’s latest move! Having spent countless hours glued to my phone during games, I can attest that the convenience of live scores on my lock screen will be a game-changer.
Apple is ready for some football.
The leading tech company is planning to upgrade its Apple Sports application in preparation for upcoming NFL and college football events, mainly featuring real-time NFL and college football scores, as well as a novel “drive tracker,” plus other enhancements and user-friendly functions.
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled about one standout addition: Apple Live Activities support. This means real-time updates, like game scores, can pop up right on my iPhone lock screen, freeing me from constantly opening the app to stay updated!
According to Oliver Schusser, Apple’s VP of Music, TV+, Sports, and Beats, the primary focus is on the scores, which is exactly what this app aims to provide. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he emphasized that they are considering this project from a sports enthusiast’s perspective, as everyone working on it shares the same passion for sports.
The reason behind incorporating unique aspects tailored for football, such as the progress tracker that displays the lines of a football field on the screen, was to provide viewers with an effortless means to monitor the advancement of their team quickly.
“Schusser explains they aim to make the user’s experience as straightforward as possible while ensuring they receive information effortlessly and effectively. To achieve this goal, they considered solutions like the drive tracker, which offers a clear and efficient way to understand events happening on the field, serving as their benchmark for all decisions.”
Apple plans to introduce advanced search and upgraded drop-down navigation as part of iOS 18, along with other changes. Moreover, Schusser mentioned that Apple is dedicated to increasing its involvement in the sports sector, acknowledging that creating user interfaces for various worldwide sports requires careful consideration and time.
“He mentions that there’s clearly a lot of engineering involved in this app, with the aim of transforming something intricate and divided within the market into an effortless experience. As we’ve consistently stated, our goal is to expand the app to include more sports leagues. At the moment, we don’t have any announcements, but keep an eye out as we might discuss additional sports and leagues in the not-too-distant future.”
