As a movie reviewer with over three decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen it all – from the rise and fall of cinematic empires to the birth and death of countless productions. And let me tell you, dear reader, when it comes to Apple TV+’s “Time Bandits,” I can’t help but feel a pang of melancholy.
It’s worth noting that Apple TV+ has chosen to discontinue the show “Time Bandits.” The series debuted on their streaming platform on July 24 and concluded its 10-episode run on August 21, less than a month later. As reported by Deadline, this decision was made after only one season of the show, which is an adaptation of Terry Gilliam’s 1981 film with the same title, has been produced.
The success or failure of the show remains uncertain as its audience numbers haven’t been revealed yet. However, it appears that the reason for its cancellation might be due to its poor performance, since it didn’t make it into Nielsen’s Top 10 rankings. In today’s competitive streaming landscape, particularly for fantasy shows, strong viewership is crucial to keep them running. Regrettably, Time Bandits didn’t meet the expected viewership targets, causing Apple TV+ to reevaluate the show’s future.
Titled “Time Bandits“, this show draws inspiration from an iconic classic, renowned for its creative storytelling. It maintains the original plot: An 11-year-old history enthusiast named Kevin gets recruited into a notorious band of time travelers, who embark on grand adventures spanning across space and through different eras. The series boasts a talented ensemble, including Lisa Kudrow, Kal-El Tuck, and Charlyne Yi. Iain Morris, Jemaine Clement, and Taika Waititi serve as the showrunners, with Clement and Waititi also appearing regularly in the series. Unfortunately, despite all the right elements, Time Bandits failed to resonate with a wide audience.
Time Bandits Failed To Captivate Audiences
It appears that the main cause for the show’s downturn might be insufficient marketing efforts. Many people, both regular viewers and potential ones, were uninformed about Time Bandits, resulting in low viewer turnout. Regardless of its skillfully made episodes, top-notch production, and captivating narratives, it failed to strike a chord with a wider audience. This discrepancy between quality and popularity is a hurdle often encountered by content creators in the streaming industry.
During an interview with Variety, showrunner Iain Morris referred to the original “Time Bandits” as a “forgotten masterpiece.” He lamented that the film didn’t receive sufficient acclaim when it initially came out, but expressed optimism that the upcoming series might remedy that oversight.
“You mention it to a lot of people and they’ve never heard of it, but you meet other people and it’s their favorite film. But they are quite rare. So if you’re bringing these brilliant ideas that people have and these brilliant worlds, and expanding and changing and introducing them to a new audience, I think it’s great. Some of the best songs ever made are cover versions.”
In essence, it’s becoming harder for fantasy series in general to make their mark amidst a crowded streaming market. Shows such as House of the Dragon, Interview With the Vampire, and Doctor Who are enjoying great success, leaving productions like Time Bandits in their wake. Despite Rotten Tomatoes praising Time Bandits as an “energetic adventure that becomes more captivating as it progresses,” the Apple TV+ series struggles to leave a lasting impression.
