As a long-time fan of Billy Crystal’s comedic genius, I must say I was taken aback when I heard he would be starring in a psychological thriller series, “Before,” on Apple TV+. Known for his iconic roles in romantic comedies and family-friendly animated films, it seems that Crystal is ready to explore the darker side of acting!

Apple TV+ has unveiled a sneak peek at the upcoming movie “Before,” showcasing legendary comedian Billy Crystal in a new, dramatic role unlike any he’s played before. This psychological thriller with an atmospheric feel is expected to focus heavily on character development and will see Crystal taking center stage as the lead actor.

Prior to designating Crystal as Eli, a child psychologist, who had recently experienced the loss of his wife, Lynn (Light), he crosses paths with a disturbed adolescent named Noah (Jupe). This boy appears to harbor an eerie link to Eli’s past. As Eli endeavors to assist Noah, their enigmatic relationship intensifies further.

As someone who has been following Crystal’s career for quite some time, I must say that the recently released images of her new project have taken me by surprise. Known for her bright and cheerful demeanor, it is intriguing to see a more somber and ominous portrayal of Crystal. It seems that she has dived deep into the character’s darker side, which I find quite captivating, as it showcases a different facet of her acting abilities. This change in atmosphere leaves me eager to learn more about the storyline and to see how Crystal will bring this new character to life on screen.

Thorp takes on the roles of showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Crystal also serves as an executive producer, with Eric Roth (notable for his work on “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Dune”), Adam Bernstein (known for “Silo” and “Billions”), and Jet Wilkinson (renowned for “The Chi” and “Truth Be Told”) joining as executive producers and directors.

Without a doubt, Billy Crystal is recognized for his versatile talents as an actor, comedian, singer, author, producer, and director. His fame initially soared with appearances on television shows such as “Soap” on ABC, along with his stint as a cast member and host on “Saturday Night Live” in the latter part of the 70s and 80s.

After transitioning to big-screen comedies, Crystal demonstrated his talent in films like “Running Scared,” “Throw Momma from the Train,” “Memories of Me,” “Mr. Saturday Night,” “Forget Paris,” “Father’s Day,” “Analyze This,” and “America’s Sweethearts.” However, his most iconic performance during this period was in the 1989 romantic comedy “When Harry Met Sally,” where he starred alongside Meg Ryan. The film chronicles the story of Harry and Sally from their youth to maturity, spanning twelve years through a series of chance meetings. It is now widely regarded as one of the finest examples of the romantic-comedy genre.

In the year 2001, a significant shift occurred for the comedian as he took on the voice role of Mike Wazaowski, the monster, in the Pixar animated film “Monsters, Inc”. Later, in 2013, Crystal returned to this character in the sequel titled “Monsters University”, and has been continuing to portray him in the current Disney+ series called “Monsters at Work”.

Throughout her career, Crystal has garnered numerous accolades, such as six Primetime Emmys, a Tony, along with nominations for three Grammy and three Golden Globe Awards. It’s intriguing to consider her potential performance in the thriller genre, given her impressive track record in comedy.
