Apptoide, the so-called first free App Store for iOS, is now available for free in the EU

  • Aptoide, the independent App Store, is now available for free on iOS for EU users
  • While it calls itself the first alternative app store to arrive for free, the Epic Games Store did hit first
  • But Aptoide may have a claim to being the first general, third-party storefront

If you’ve been seeking an option other than the App Store for iOS, your search has generally been unsuccessful due to Apple’s extensive guardianship over their app ecosystem. However, following years of legal disputes, things started to change last year, and now, similar to Epic Games entering iOS, a fresh competitor, named Aptoide, has emerged in the market.

For those who remember, we previously discussed Aptoide during its initial beta launch back in mid-2024. Now, iOS users residing in the EU have an opportunity to download Aptoide at no cost and explore it themselves. It’s worth noting that Aptoide asserts itself as the first alternative app storefront on iOS; however, you may recall that the Epic Games Store had already launched (in full release) a few months prior.

Aptoide stands out by offering a wide variety of app releases, not only focusing on gaming but also featuring general apps. Additionally, it provides an unique feature allowing users to choose the specific version of a release they prefer, a feature said to be exclusive to their platform and was previously limited to Android users.

Alternatively, yours

In a less guarded manner, my previous statements might seem somewhat skeptical, but I truly believe Aptoide holds a legitimate first-mover advantage, particularly considering their beta phase. Unlike the Epic Games Store I mentioned earlier, which is technically third-party, it’s still primarily owned by a significant industry player. At its core, the EGS can be considered more of an extension of that major player rather than an independent platform.

For individuals following the legal battle between Epic and Apple, as well as the expansion of the once restricted iOS marketplace, this development is certainly exciting. Now, everyone will be eagerly observing whether Aptoide can indeed attract those discontented with Apple’s platform.
