AR Rahman is ‘most ordinary man’ until he sits on piano, says Teri Mitti lyricist Manoj Muntashir: ‘There is nothing extraordinary in him’

As a lifestyle expert with a deep appreciation for music and the arts, I must say that my encounter with AR Rahman has left an indelible mark on my soul. His humility, simplicity, and pure genius are truly awe-inspiring. Like Manoj Muntashir, I too was captivated by his duality – the ordinary man who walks among us, and the extraordinary maestro who transforms our world with his music.

AR Rahman is widely recognized as a legendary musician, a masterful maestro, and an exceptionally talented artist whose influence touches millions worldwide. His presence carries such weight that it’s difficult for anyone to pass by without acknowledging his extraordinary talent. While renowned lyricist Manoj Muntashir considers Rahman unique in the music industry, he also emphasized that off the piano, he is an ordinary man like any other.

In a chat with O2India, Manoj Muntashir spoke about his collaboration with AR Rahman. He highly admired the renowned musician, stating that he’s remarkably simple – from his clothing to his speech and posture. As Muntashir put it, “Rahman appears as an ordinary individual in the world until he takes his seat at the piano.

Manoj, known for composing hits such as Teri Mitti, Galliyan, Tere Sang Yaara, Kaun Tujhe among others, added that there’s nothing extraordinary about him, which makes him unique. Unlike many others, Rahman doesn’t wear his fame like a badge; instead, he seems unaware of his status as a megastar and singing sensation.

Reflecting on our chat about music, I mentioned that I hadn’t shared anything particularly deep or insightful until you introduced the topic. However, once we delved into the realm of music, it felt as though an atomic power source had been ignited within me.

In a state of star-struck euphoria, I, a fervent admirer, found myself utterly spellbound by A.R. Rahman’s presence. I was encountering two distinct Rahmans: one, an ordinary man, humble and unassuming; the other, the grandiose figure seated at the piano, his fingers weaving magic. Yet, in that moment, it seemed as though they were worlds apart, a chasm I found myself unable to bridge.

In my own words, I’d say: “I found it beyond human comprehension; only a divine being could have accomplished such a thing. My initial encounter with him left me bewildered, not at all what I expected, even in my most imaginative moments.” Manoj shared this sentiment, reflecting on their unexpected first meeting.

Recently, AR Rahman generated news following his announcement of separating from his wife, Saira Banu, after 29 years of marriage. The situation became complex when Mohini Dey, a former bassist of AR Rahman, declared her separation from Mark Hartsuch, leading some to wonder if these two events might be connected.
