‘Arc ZERO: Eclipse’ Brings Mist and Light Installation to Seoul’s Skyline

Summary

  • Arc ZERO: Eclipse by Studio JT brings a glowing ring of mist and light to Seoul
  • The installation uses water and light, not screens, for a real-time atmospheric effect
  • Built with The Ton, it follows a CODA Award-winning version in Taiwan

A stunning, brand-new public sculpture has made its appearance in Seoul, drawing attention and altering the cityscape with an otherworldly ambiance. Named “Arc ZERO: Eclipse“, this grand oculus installation by designer James Tapscott and Studio JT’s team creates a halo of mist and light hovering in mid-air.

The unique diamond-patterned structure carefully distributes water vapor in a smooth, manageable stream. As this mist ascends, it reflects Seoul’s changing daytime and nighttime light, resulting in a luminous aura that gently changes with the environment. This installation is designed to reduce glare from surfaces and enhance immersion, giving an almost ethereal feel.

Instead of the digital spectacles commonly seen in modern public art, Arc ZERO: Eclipse employs a streamlined technological approach. It primarily utilizes fundamental physical forces like water, wind, gravity, and light to create its enchantment. As designboom was told by Tapscott, “It’s not an imitation of an oculus; it’s real, responsive, and vibrant.

The Seoul setup is the most recent addition to an international sequence of installations. It succeeds a renowned permanent piece in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, which received the 2023 CODA Award for landscape art. We worked together with Korean company The Ton on the local manufacturing and installation process.
