2025 sees Hulu kicking off the year with momentum as it broadens its extensive library by adding Nicolas Cage’s post-apocalyptic horror flick, “Arcadian,” to its lineup. This movie debuted at South by Southwest (SXSW) in March 2024 and had a wide release in April, but will now be available on Hulu starting January 24 of this year. Upon its initial premiere, the film received generally favorable reviews, with critics hailing it as a strong addition to Cage’s impressive body of work. Now, “Arcadian” joins the collection of Nicolas Cage films already streaming on the platform.
As a devoted cinephile, I must say that Benjamin Brewer directed the gripping film, “Arcadian”. This isn’t my first time working with the legendary actor Nicolas Cage; we previously collaborated on the 2016 film, “The Trust”, which also starred Elijah Wood. The script was penned by our long-time collaborator Michael Nilon.
The movie revolves around Paul, played by Cage, a father who is compelled to safeguard his twin teenage sons, Joseph (Jaeden Martell) and Thomas (Maxwell Jenkins), from terrifying and enigmatic creatures. With its poignant exploration of paternal bonds and survival, it’s a bone-chilling movie that fans of Cage or post-apocalyptic sci-fi should not miss. But be warned, it might be too intense for the sensitive viewer.
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I must say that “Arcadian” has garnered accolades for its gripping suspense, despite some familiar and somewhat predictable storylines. My own take on it aligns with Movieweb’s review, which lauds it as an impressive blend of horror and thriller. However, other critics have praised the movie’s imaginative monster design and the way emotional acting elevates the stereotypical narrative beats often found in this genre.
On the flip side, there have been criticisms about “Arcadian’s” third act. Yet, what makes this film captivating is Nicolas Cage’s restrained portrayal. This performance doesn’t necessarily deliver the over-the-top moments that his fans are accustomed to, but it certainly adds depth to the overall experience.
‘Arcadian’ Joins a Long List of Nicolas Cage Films on Hulu
Beginning January 24th, Arcadian will join a massive collection of Nicolas Cage films on Hulu. Given their unique nature, it almost feels like organizing a Cage film marathon. Other movies featuring Cage currently streaming on Hulu include the 2023 psychological thriller “Sympathy for the Devil,” co-starring Joel Kinnaman; the 2021 animatronic horror movie “Willy’s Wonderland”; the 2023 Western film “The Old Way”; and the action comedy “The Retirement Plan.
The addition of “Arcadian” on Hulu broadens the diverse range of Nicolas Cage films, featuring a distinct genre marked by family dynamics and eerie creatures boasting captivating designs. Despite some tropes found in monster movies, the photophobic monsters stand out with their unsettling aesthetics and bizarre behaviors, making them just as chilling as they are in the film. While “Arcadian” may not fully embody Cage’s signature quirks, it offers an engaging viewing experience nonetheless.
If you’re a fan of Nicolas Cage or enjoy sci-fi horror films, or even both, you should definitely consider watching “Arcadian” when it premieres on Hulu on January 24. This movie is an exciting addition to the streaming service and has many compelling reasons to watch. The fact that more people can now experience this film is fantastic news! If the intensity of “Arcadian” becomes too much, there are lighter classics like “Con-Air” available as well.
