Are gamers suffering from subscription fatigue?

As a long-time gaming enthusiast, I’ve seen the landscape evolve dramatically over the years, from the humble beginnings of cartridges to the digital age we find ourselves in today. The emergence of subscription and streaming services has certainly added a layer of convenience that was once unimaginable. However, it seems like the industry is now teetering on the brink of saturation – or perhaps even over-subscription!

In the realm of entertainment, particularly gaming, subscription and streaming services have become ubiquitous. Services like Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation Plus, and various lesser-known gaming subscription platforms have made quite an impact. It’s not surprising then, that enthusiasts might be feeling a bit overwhelmed or exhausted by this trend.

At first, the idea was to facilitate users in effortlessly locating and utilizing content they desired, without being bound by prolonged cable agreements, sifting through myriad channels, or being annoyed by continuous advertisements. However, nowadays, users are feeling overwhelmed due to an abundance of services available across various entertainment platforms.

Based on findings from a study conducted by ExpressVPN, approximately 40% of individuals report feeling weighed down by what is known as “subscription fatigue,” expressing feelings of being overburdened due to numerous services competing for their financial resources.

Regarding gaming, it’s found that these services rank as the third favorite among those polled, with approximately a quarter (24%) of individuals subscribing to at least one. This preference is overshadowed only by music services (51%) and content streaming platforms (75%).

Approximately 62% of users opt to utilize their subscription services primarily through gaming consoles, such as Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation Plus, Nintendo Switch Online Membership, and specialized platforms like EA Play or Ubisoft Plus, being the most frequently chosen options.

Approximately half of the subscribers access their subscriptions using a smartphone, indicating the significant growth in popularity of mobile gaming. Companies such as Apple and Android have capitalized on this trend by offering mobile gaming subscription services like Apple Arcade and Google Play Pass, which have experienced remarkable success.

It’s been determined that fatigue has influenced the expansion of gaming subscription services. A report by Metro, based on data from NPD analyst Mat Piscatella in March 2024, indicated that spending on console and PC subscriptions grew barely by 1% compared to April 2023. In April 2023, there was a minimal increase of just 2% compared to the same month in 2022. This trend suggests that people aren’t joining services like Game Pass or PS+ at the rates they did previously.

Although Google Stadia didn’t achieve the subscriber numbers they aimed for, it might be argued that few gaming subscription services have experienced a failure on par with Google Stadia.

Introduced in November 2019, Google Stadia aimed to provide a seamless and superior gaming experience by streaming games directly through your Chromecast device, eliminating the need for any time-consuming installations.

Regrettably, the cloud gaming service didn’t gain much traction due to users not being well-versed in it. Furthermore, user retention posed challenges for Google, as reported by Forbes.

By 2022, Google estimated they would control about 10% of the cloud gaming market, but their actual share never rose above 5%. On the other hand, Xbox Cloud Gaming held a dominant position with around 60-70% of the market.

It seems that gamers, like those enjoying content from streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon, and Apple, are experiencing a similar issue called ‘subscription burnout’.

In addition to growing fatigue, concerns about services like Game Pass and PS+ also encompass the matter of content ownership. It seems that this has become a significant concern among gamers, as developers and businesses have the ability to remove games from online stores without much prior notice.

As a gamer, I can see that game developers need to be mindful of their strategies to avoid overwhelming the gaming market and causing its eventual collapse. It’s a crucial challenge they’ll have to address sooner, rather than later.
