Are Ubisoft Actually Going To Release A Finished Game This Time?

As a dedicated gamer with years of experience under my belt, I must say I’m quite pleased with Ubisoft‘s recent decision regarding Assassin’s Creed Shadows. The delay until February 2025 may seem like an eternity, but given the lessons they learned from the less-than-stellar release of Star Wars Outlaws, it’s a wise move to ensure a polished product.

Ubisoft has announced that they are moving back the release date for Assassin’s Creed Shadows from October of this year to February 14, 2025. They also shared that the game will be available to purchase on Steam from its initial release day.

Moreover, Ubisoft plans to abandon the season pass model and exclusive benefits for early purchasers of a game. In contrast, players who have already pre-ordered Assassin’s Creed: Shadows will be rewarded with the initial expansion at no additional cost.

On September 25th, it was announced that the release of Shadows had been postponed because the game was already fully developed, but there were significant issues with Star Wars: Outlaws that needed addressing.

As a die-hard Star Wars enthusiast, I can tell you that the valuable insights gleaned from the Star Wars Outlaws launch have prompted me to carve out extra time to perfect this gem even more.

Are Ubisoft Actually Going To Release A Finished Game This Time?

It wasn’t hidden that Ubisoft had high hopes for Star Wars Outlaws, counting on it to make a big impact, both in terms of critical acclaim and sales success. Unfortunately, the open-world game didn’t ignite the sales charts in either category.

Currently, Outlaws holds a Metacritic rating of 76. This isn’t disastrous, but it falls significantly short of the top-rated games of the year, such as Final Fantasy VII Rebirth with a score of 92 and Astro Bot boasting a remarkable 94.

According to a recent announcement, Ubisoft revealed that the sales of Outlaws were lower than anticipated, and this undoubtedly impacted their choice to postpone the release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows again.

As a gamer, I’ve got some firsthand experience with Outlaws, and while it had its moments, the game was plagued with some serious technical hiccups. The most frustrating issue for PS5 players like myself was encountering a bug that required us to erase our early access data when the game officially launched on August 27th, which wasn’t exactly a smooth transition.

Despite debates surrounding Ubisoft’s portrayal of feudal Japan, the shift in approach has been positively received by fans. This is because it distances itself from more exploitative business tactics, as players no longer need to spend over $100 to enjoy early access or post-release DLC content.

In other words, due to a shift in its release date to February 14, the upcoming game AC Shadows won’t be going head-to-head with Capcom’s Monster Hunter: Wilds, which is scheduled for launch two weeks afterward on February 28.
