As a gamer with a heart for musicals and a penchant for anticipation, I can’t help but feel like I’ve been on an epic quest, waiting for the release of the long-awaited movie adaptation of “Wicked.” Ever since its Broadway debut back in 2003, it has been a staple in my musical theatre adventures. Now, with Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo leading the cast, I can’t help but feel like we’re about to embark on an unforgettable adventure together.
It’s surprising to think that back in 2008, the popular musical “Wicked” was initially considered for a movie. But now, it’s not just talk – the film is actually happening! As its release date in November approaches, the two main actresses, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, have started an adorable countdown to keep us excited. I can’t help but be thrilled about the upcoming movie adaptation of this musical!
When the musical “Wicked” first appeared on Broadway in 2003, featuring Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, it became a hot topic among theater enthusiasts. With the upcoming release of the two-part film adaptation of “Wicked,” there’s just as much excitement building now. It seems that Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo have found a way to amplify my (and probably many others’) anticipation for the movie premiere. Take a look at Grande’s Instagram post below to see how they are eagerly awaiting the film’s debut:

Indeed, we now find ourselves with an exciting 80 days left until the movie’s release! At first glance, that might seem like a considerable stretch of time. However, given how swiftly 2024 seems to be progressing, those days could pass by in a blink. Moreover, the two main actresses have previously shared charming photos, but this latest one truly stands out as exceptional
Truly thrilling! I’m absolutely bursting with anticipation to witness Ariana Grande embody Galinda, and Cynthia Erivo breathe life into Elphaba, in Jon M. Chu’s Wicked adaptation. Among the other stellar cast members I can hardly wait for are Ethan Slater from Spongebob Squarepants: The Broadway Musical, Jonathan Bailey from Bridgerton, Jeff Goldblum and Michelle Yeoh – to name just a few! Can’t contain my excitement!
Among the many intriguing aspects of the upcoming movie is the opportunity to listen to fresh renditions of the musical’s cherished melodies, and Cynthia Erivo has shared her most anticipated song: “Popular”. Though I anticipate the comedic interplay between the main characters during this song will be amusing, I remain hopeful for “Defying Gravity”, as it promises to be a powerful ballad symbolizing Elphaba’s complete metamorphosis into the Wicked Witch of the West
Experiencing the latest countdown for the upcoming first part of the adaptation feels dream-like, given the unpredictable journey of its release dates. The COVID-19 pandemic prompted Universal to reschedule their movie releases, causing the musical to be postponed initially. Later, it was decided that Part One would premiere on Christmas Day, but this plan changed and it was moved up to November 27th to dodge competition from Avatar 3 (originally scheduled for this year). This decision pushed back the release of Part Two to November 26th, 2025 instead of its original Christmas Day
On the same day, movies like “Wicked: Part One” and “Gladiator 2” are set to release. This could stir memories of the twin-bill sensation, colloquially known as “Barbenheimer.” Ignoring the double-feature prospects for a moment, I’m genuinely thrilled about the opportunity to witness Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo sharing the silver screen together. Mark my words, I can hardly wait until we can finally catch the first movie on November 27th. Until then, keep an eye out for updates on upcoming films scheduled for release in 2024
