Filmmaker Jon M. Chu enchanted countless cinema owners in Las Vegas on Tuesday, as he unveiled sneak peeks of Universal’s eagerly awaited “Wicked: For Good,” which marks the second installment in his dual-part screen adaptation of the legendary Broadway musical.
Additionally, the presentation wouldn’t have been fully rounded out without the help of stars Ariana Grande, portraying Glinda the Good Witch, and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, better known as the Wicked Witch of the West. They joined Chu and producer Marc Platt on stage at the expansive Colosseum Theater at Caesars Palace, where industry professionals are currently gathering to catch a glimpse of Hollywood studios’ upcoming lineups.
The presentation was made even more complete with the participation of stars Ariana Grande, who brought Glinda the Good Witch to life, and Cynthia Erivo, playing the role of Elphaba, the infamous Wicked Witch of the West. They shared the stage with Chu and producer Marc Platt within the spacious Colosseum Theater at Caesars Palace, where film industry professionals are spending this week to witness the upcoming offerings from Hollywood studios.
We gave it a try and split the musical ‘Wicked’ into two pieces,” Platt stated. “Now, we get to repeat the process with ‘Wicked: For Good’ in November.
Reflecting on last year’s smash movie hit, I might’ve sneaked into a sing-along session or two. Can’t hide our excitement to hit the road once more! Speaking of that intense first film, let me tell you, everyone cried – yes, even you! (Don’t deny it.)
As explained by Platt, the second movie invites viewers to delve deeper into the characters, uncovering greater depth, complexity, and profoundness. The experience promised is sure to leave audiences amazed.
Chu hinted at an exciting part of the upcoming second movie, suggesting that it would involve “the girl from Kansas making an appearance.
The astonishing footage from the movie “Wicked” left everyone spellbound, and this was far more than just an ordinary reaction. The standing ovation it received was well-deserved, given the exceptional quality of the visuals.
The video revealed Dorothy for the first time, though her face remained hidden, accompanied by plenty of golden bricks, a wedding scene, and numerous flying monkeys.
In the sequel, I found myself grappling with the repercussions of my past decisions, as portrayed by the two enchanting witches. The scenes imply that our strong bond, which has weathered many storms, remains unbroken, with Glinda even taking it upon herself to issue a cautionary warning.
In one instance, Erivo states, “This concerns the Wizard and me.” Later on, Grande issues a warning: “Elphaba, they are approaching to get you.
The movie titled “For Good: Wicked” is set to premiere in theaters on November 21, 2025, marking a significant milestone as it was approximately one year after the global release of “Wicked” which went on to earn an astounding $750 million at the worldwide box office, making it the highest-grossing Broadway adaptation ever.
This week, enthusiasts of the musical Wicked rejoiced on social media upon the discovery of the initial poster for the sequel film at CinemaCon. The image depicts Elphaba and Glinda (previously known as Galinda) perched on separate cliffs. The iconic yellow brick road and the wizard’s palace in Oz, where the climactic “Defying Gravity” scene from the first movie takes place, are positioned in the valley between them.
The movies were inspired by a 2003 musical sharing the same title, itself derived from Gregory Maguire’s top-selling book that explores the lesser-known tales of the witches in Oz.
Dana Fox and Winnie Holzman were responsible for scripting the stage version, while Stephen Schwartz, a multiple Academy Award winner for music and lyrics, transformed it into a screen musical. Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth first played Elphaba and Glinda on Broadway, and they made surprise appearances during the “One Short Day” scene in the adapted film.
