As a fan who has grown with Ariana Grande throughout her career, I am truly astounded by the maturity and depth she showcases in her role as Glinda in Wicked. Her journey from a pop sensation to a Broadway star is nothing short of remarkable. The way she has embraced this new chapter in her life and allowed her fans to be part of it is truly commendable.
Ariana Grande remains an ardent admirer of “Wicked”, despite her role as a cast member in the film directed by Jon M. Chu. In truth, she believes she has watched it over ten times.
Ariana Grande admitted that she had misplaced the number of times she’d watched the movie during her Golden Globes nomination announcement. However, she reminisced about a humorous incident from a private screening with some relatives, stating that she might have seen it around ten times. She recounted an instance when she watched the film with her grandmother in Florida. Despite being engrossed in the movie, Ariana admitted to checking her phone a few times. Her mother then scolded her for not paying attention, to which Ariana replied that she wasn’t just watching it, but was also part of it. She jokingly insisted that she knew what was happening and could quickly check her messages. However, her mother reminded her that she was talking during the movie!
Emilia Perez, Selena Gomez, Felicity Jones (from ‘The Brutalist’), Margaret Qualley (from ‘The Substance’), Isabella Rossellini (from ‘Conclave’), and Zoe Saldaña were all nominated in the category of Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture. Emilia Perez is also named as Emilia Pérez in one of the movies.
The film Wicked was additionally nominated in several categories, including those for lead actress Cynthia Erivo, cinematographic and financial success, as well as the top honor of Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy).
The Golden Globe Awards are produced by Dick Clark Productions, which is co-owned by Penske Media Eldridge – a partnership between Penske Media Corporation and Eldridge, the same group that owns The Hollywood Reporter.
Following the unveiling of the Golden Globe nominations, Grande chatted with THR about the movie’s nominations, the emotionally charged press tour, and her journey growing up alongside her fans.
After dedicating three years of your time to this movie, it’s been a long-standing project for you as well. What does it mean to be honored for it simultaneously with Cynthia Erivo today?
This experience feels incredibly unreal, not something I ever anticipated. It’s so surreal that I can’t help but feel deeply thankful. We were completely engrossed in the work and I was overjoyed to have the opportunity to contribute. Every day, from my first audition to the final day on set for both movies, I led with deep gratitude. Cynthia and I did our best to stay focused on the work together. As a friend, as a partner in this endeavor, and as a resident of Oz, everyone gave their all to this project, and every detail, every aspect of it, is palpable. I’m just so thankful, but it’s hard to put into words.
What has been something that surprised you during filming?
It seems we enjoyed daily surprises for each other, and Jon Chu, being an exceptionally careful and considerate director, brings the shots and storyboard to life with precision, accompanied by music. His detailed vision is remarkable, yet he’s not just about following a plan; he loves to experiment, resulting in unexpected outcomes that he refers to as “catching butterflies.” I believe this is what allowed us all to feel and express freedom, truth, and creativity through play and improvisation every day. It takes a great leader to draw out such unique qualities, and Jon Chu truly excels at it.
The movie was additionally recognized in the best comedy or musical classification, and it tackles topics such as acceptance, discrimination, and representation, all while being incredibly humorous. I was intrigued by how skillfully the film managed to blend humor with its more serious themes; what were your thoughts on this balance?
To begin with, thank you for your attention. However, it’s crucial to emphasize the importance of honesty, especially when it comes to comedy. We’re not just performing a joke, but rather, we’re expressing the truth, which is what truly resonates with audiences. This is particularly true in portraying Glinda, as there are multiple layers beneath her surface that need to be highlighted for the humor to work effectively.
The press tour for this film has been huge. Are you exhausted?
As a dedicated fan, I find the journey incredibly amusing because people frequently ask us, “Aren’t you exhausted? Aren’t you dead?” The humor lies in the fact that our bodies might be feeling the strain, but our inner selves are brimming with excitement and gratitude. We can hardly contain ourselves as we embark on this next phase of our adventure.
What’s been the evolution of your fanbase and your connection with them since your role in Wicked?
Overwhelmed with emotions, it’s fascinating to see my fans grow alongside me throughout diverse stages of my music career and personal life. They have become a significant part of my journey, especially as Glinda in Wicked, and their support has been a source of comfort for me during this unique experience. I was less active on social media during the filming process, focusing more on immersing myself in this opportunity rather than being distracted by my phone. Surprisingly, they dubbed it “The Dark Ages,” just because they missed seeing updates from me. However, it’s heartwarming to know that they appreciated the work I was doing and have embraced this new phase of my life. Throughout my career and adulthood, we’ve been growing together, and their acceptance of this new chapter fills me with immense gratitude. Ultimately, I aim to make them proud and continue to cherish our shared journey. It’s truly beautiful, and I am deeply grateful for it all.
