Ever since its November 22nd premiere, I’ve been swept away by the enchanting magic of “Wicked.” Fans everywhere are raving about this movie, and some have even declared their affection for it surpasses that of the Broadway show, despite a few significant changes. As for the cinematic adaptations, one of the most ardent Ozians, Ariana Grande, has shared that one of her favorite lines was missing from the final cut.
As award season approaches and “Wicked” Part 2 scheduled for release in 2025, the film’s cast and crew remain occupied and busy. Ariana Grande was recently spotted at the Palm Springs International Film Awards, where she spoke with Variety on the red carpet about her favorite line that didn’t make it into the final cut. She admitted that she adored them all, but a specific moment during the train departure scene struck a chord with her. In her own words:
I adore every single one of them, as each holds a special place within my heart. One scene that particularly resonates with me is when Boq (played by Ethan Slater) and Elphaba (portrayed by Erivo) are at the train station. That moment is among my favorites.
As a passionate cinephile, I find myself captivated by this pivotal moment in the film, a scene that subtly hinges the narrative, revealing layers of intrigue beneath the surface yet to fully unfold. It’s hardly surprising that the talented singer and actress find themselves drawn to this critical juncture within the story, as it holds an undeniable allure and suspense.
She explicitly mentioned that the interaction occurs between Boq and Elphaba, where they both express a desire to reveal their honest feelings. Upon initially reading it with her acting coach, they highlighted that particular line.
The initial instance when I encountered the script, specifically where Boq utters, “‘Sorry, I misunderstood. I thought we were being honest,” my acting coach Nancy Banks and I enclosed numerous hearts as we both exclaimed, “This is the most impactful line in the entire film!
As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but emphasize that this deleted scene holds significant weight in the narrative as a whole. In this previously unseen encounter, Boq and Elphaba engage in a heartfelt dialogue about their feelings towards each other. While he acknowledges her suspicions, she refutes his claims. This intriguing exchange, missing from the Broadway musical, offers a profound glimpse into Elphaba’s character and emotional depth – aspects that Grande and her acting coach believe are crucial for understanding her complex persona. Here’s hoping that this scene, along with others promised by director Jon M. Chu, gets released soon, offering fans a deeper insight into the storyline.
The positive and thrilling response to the movie from esteemed filmmakers like George Lucas has been encouraging for Chu to receive such feedback. The director of “Crazy Rich Asians” has been releasing tantalizing glimpses of Part 2, which has me eagerly anticipating it, not to mention the prospect of watching the whole sequel. And now, the competition in the Oscar race for Part 1 has become even more intriguing following the fact that “Wicked” only received a solitary Golden Globe.
We’ll need to observe when all the movies and recordings become available to get a clear picture. Fingers crossed there will be an extended edition at some point. Regarding the deleted scenes, it’s reassuring they’re being shared online, even the standout scene.
Currently, you can catch “Wicked” on stage at theaters, or stream it on video-on-demand platforms. The sequel is set to premiere on November 21st.
