David Massey, a longtime music industry leader who revitalized the iconic Arista Records, has decided to step down from his position at the company following a seven-year tenure as its head, according to an announcement made by Sony Music on Monday.
Massey is set to continue in his role until the end of June. As of now, Sony Music has not disclosed who will take over from Massey, but they have confirmed that there’s a succession plan in place and Arista Records will continue as an independent label within the Sony Music structure.
I’ve been incredibly privileged to spend this phase of my career returning to Sony Music. Working alongside Rob Stringer, a truly inspiring executive whom I deeply respect, and with the remarkable Sony team globally, has been an exceptional experience,” Massey stated. “Over almost seven years, we built Arista from the ground up, and I’m incredibly proud of our team’s accomplishments and the successes of our talented young artists. I am confident that Arista will continue to thrive in the future.
In 2018, Sony named Massey as Arista’s president, five years after Sony closed down the label initially established by Clive Davis in 1974. Notable artists like Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, and Barry Manilow had once found their home at Arista. Under Massey’s leadership, the label added new talents such as JP Saxe, Lola Brooke, and the internationally acclaimed band Måneskin, who gained a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist following their popular cover of “Beggin” by The Four Seasons.
Prior to leading Arista, Massey held the position of CEO at Island Records under UMG, where he collaborated with musicians such as Shawn Mendes, Demi Lovato, Fall Out Boy, among others. Earlier in his career, he served as president of Mercury Records and worked as an A&R executive within Sony.
Rob Stringer, chairman of Sony Music Group, expressed gratitude for collaborating with David on the revival of Arista. In a statement, he acknowledged that David was a highly esteemed and crucial senior executive for the company on two separate occasions, both as a friend and professional colleague. As David retires, Rob wishes him endless happiness. He also noted that Arista will continue to flourish due to the foundations David has laid.
