As a seasoned gamer of political satire and comedic TV shows, I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming live table read event for Veep! With the addition of Armando Iannucci, Larry David, Jason Alexander, and Kevin Smith, this reunion is shaping up to be a mini-Seinfeld meets Veep turducken extravaganza.
Veep‘s election fundraiser reunion has booked some special guests.
On Sunday, the team behind HBO’s beloved political satire series, Veep, will host a live reading event. Participating in this event are the show’s creator, Armando Iannucci, as well as Larry David, Jason Alexander, and Kevin Smith.
We’re overjoyed to announce that Armando, the genius behind Veep, is joining our team,” David Mandel, the showrunner of Veep, shares with The Hollywood Reporter. “I am absolutely thrilled to have Larry David and Jason Alexander on board too. It’s almost like a mini-Seinfeld gathering inside a Veep gathering. Just like a turducken!
As a die-hard fan of “Veep,” I can’t help but feel thrilled that Kevin Smith, the mastermind behind iconic film series like “Jay and Silent Bob” and “Mallrats,” shares my enthusiasm. His movies have always had a delightfully crude charm reminiscent of “Veep,” making him an ideal fit for our table read!
For three seasons, Mandel penned scripts for the hit show ‘Seinfeld’ and animated series ‘Clerks: The Animated Series’. Later on, he assumed the role of showrunner for HBO’s political comedy ‘Veep’, taking over from Iannucci during season five. This popular sitcom, which concluded in 2019 after seven seasons, has become even more pertinent in today’s times.
Following President Joe Biden’s decision not to run for re-election in 2024 and his endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic presidential nominee this summer, creator Armando Iannucci contacted producer Alexandra Mandel and star Julia Louis-Dreyfus due to the increased popularity of their show “Veep” (with series viewership soaring 350% on Max and clips of Louis-Dreyfus’ character Selina Meyer, a powerful female politician, becoming viral). Mandel and star Louis-Dreyfus were assembling a team to brainstorm fundraising strategies for the Harris-Tim Walz ticket, and Iannucci was eager to participate.
As a dedicated fan, I’m excited to share that the idea they came up with during their brainstorming sessions resulted in the Democratic Party of Wisconsin hosting a virtual table read on Sunday, featuring one of those viral episodes – season three’s “Crate,” first aired in 2015. In this captivating episode, Vice President Meyer (Louis-Dreyfus) learns about the current POTUS stepping down, leading to her rise to the Oval Office.
8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT marks the time for an electrifying live event I’m excited to be a part of! It’s being led by none other than Stephen Colbert, and the star-studded cast includes the brilliant ensemble from Louis-Dreyfus, Tony Hale, Anna Chlumsky, Reid Scott, Timothy Simons, Sam Richardson, Matt Walsh, Gary Cole, Sarah Rutherland, Clea DuVall, and Sufe Bradshaw. If you want to join in on the fun, grab your tickets here!
Larry David typically prefers to keep out of groups and avoid participation, but we’re thrilled that he’s choosing to join us and contribute to the Veep Reunion in Wisconsin as a special guest,” Louis-Dreyfus notes. “I suspect he won’t let me forget that I asked him to be a part of it. And now, I find myself owing him a favor, which I’m already starting to regret.
In 2020 and 2022 respectively, gatherings featuring the entire cast of “Veep” (hosted by Veep crew and WisDems) and a collaboration between “The West Wing” cast members were held. These events aimed to raise funds exceeding half a million dollars in 2020 and contributed significantly to the high-stakes midterm elections in 2022.
In a statement, Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Ben Wikler emphasized that it’s our grassroots supporters who drive our statewide initiatives, enabling us to elect Democrats and pave a new path for Wisconsin. The 2024 table read event is a way to honor our long-time backers and expand our influence to those who will propel our efforts to elect Kamala Harris, Tim Walz, Tammy Baldwin, and other Democrats in Wisconsin this November. In essence, it’s about reaching out to more people and strengthening our cause.
