Armie Hammer Denies That Robert Downey Jr. Paid For His Rehab, But Explained How The Actor Supported Him

As a long-time fan of Hollywood films and a follower of the entertainment industry news, I’ve been keeping tabs on the Armie Hammer controversy for the past three years. It’s been a rollercoaster ride of emotions, from shock and disbelief to sympathy and concern.

Approximately three years after Armie Hammer faced allegations of sexual misconduct and sending texts with cannibalistic themes, he is speaking publicly about his experiences. He acknowledged the controversy surrounding reports that Robert Downey Jr. financed his rehab stay. Although Hammer denied these rumors, he shared how Downey had lent him assistance during this challenging time.

In an episode of “Piers Morgan Uncensored,” Piers Morgan pressed Hammer on several delicate issues. One of these topics revolved around allegations from nearly two years ago that Downey had covered the costs for Hammer’s rehab stay. Hammer entered rehab in the spring of 2021, and approximately a year later, news broke out that RDJ had contributed to the expenses. When confronted about it directly, the “Call Me By Your Name” star acknowledged:

No, he did not, he did not pay that.

After making the remark, Morgan inquired if RDJ had taken a “sympathetic” or “encouraging” approach towards Hammer. RDJ then shared his response.

I would say that yes he has [been supportive].

After listening to Hammer’s reply, the host remarked casually, “It seems you’re not fully on board.” He added that this information was widely known, as many people were already familiar with it. In response, the actor from “The Social Network” retorted:

I prefer not to involve any more people in my current predicament. I’m fortunate to have many individuals extending their support, and I’m deeply appreciative.

In line with the tradition of directly asking Hammer, Morgan inquired if Downey was among those who had aided him. The actor affirmatively answered and went on to reveal that the Iron Man lead would be reaching out to and assisting numerous individuals dealing with addiction recovery processes. He stated:

If you’re struggling with addiction in Hollywood, no matter if it’s alcohol, process addiction, or drug-related, there’s always someone who has gotten sober before you and is ready to offer support. The way it works is truly astonishing.

That was followed up with Morgan asking about the advice RDJ gave Hammer. In response, he said:

Sit down, shut up, everything is going to be OK.

Armie Hammer clarified that neither Leonardo DiCaprio nor Julia Roberts had reached out to him when asked about this. However, during the interview, he mentioned that Luca Guadagnino, his director from “Call Me By Your Name,” has been supportive and they’ve kept in touch. He also shared that he has communicated with Johnny Depp. Given the sensitive nature of his situation, Hammer acknowledged that anyone who publicly supports him may face criticism.

In 2022, there were reports that Armie Hammer was selling timeshares in the Cayman Islands during a scandal. Later in May 2023, it was revealed that he wouldn’t be charged with sexual assault in Los Angeles. Throughout this situation, Hammer largely avoided public attention. Recently, however, he has spoken out about the situation in an extended interview with Morgan. He expressed his gratitude for the controversy and spent over an hour answering questions regarding the past three years.

We’ll continue to provide updates as new information emerges regarding the ongoing controversy and accusations against Armie Hammer.
