As a lifelong fan, I must say that witnessing the camaraderie between Arnold Schwarzenegger and James Cameron is nothing short of awe-inspiring. Their bond, forged over decades of groundbreaking collaborations and mutual respect, transcends the silver screen and touches the hearts of fans worldwide.

Arnold Schwarzenegger and James Cameron share a longstanding connection, dating back to when Cameron cast Schwarzenegger as the antagonist T-800 in the 1984 movie “The Terminator.” Subsequently, they teamed up for “Terminator 2: Judgement Day” in 1991 and “True Lies” in 1994. More recently, they joined forces again on 2019’s “Terminator: Dark Fate,” with Cameron serving as producer. Nowadays, Cameron is immersed in the “Avatar” series, while Schwarzenegger remains an enthusiast of the Pandora universe. However, he has shared his reasons for not yet participating in a collaboration with Cameron within this realm.

In his most recent issue of Arnold’s Pump Club newsletter, Arnold Schwarzenegger responded to a fan’s question about whether he and James Cameron have discussed the possibility of him appearing in future Avatar films, potentially in a minor role. The action star, weightlifter, and ex-governor of California opened up by stating:

Among my all-time favorite films are the Avatar movies, particularly the second one that left me in tears. I hold immense admiration for Jim, whose Avatar set we visited several times. Witnessing him work is an extraordinary experience – a blend of tech and film genius, he’s also an amazing friend. To this day, we still enjoy motorcycle rides together.

Arnold Schwarzenegger has not specified whether he visited the set of the original Avatar film during production in 2007 or dropped by more recently for Avatar: The Way of Water, Avatar 3, or even Avatar 4. However, it’s clear that Arnold Schwarzenegger greatly appreciated the work James Cameron did on the first two movies, and he even shed tears while watching The Way of Water. It’s also known that Schwarzenegger and Cameron have maintained a close friendship, although it’s been 30 years since Cameron directed Schwarzenegger in his last film.

Cameron could certainly invite Schwarzenegger to join the universe of Avatar, but Schwarzenegger prefers not to do so because they no longer need a professional excuse to spend time together. In his own words, he doesn’t want to make Schwarzenegger take on a role just for the sake of it.

If the task aligns with our abilities, we’d gladly collaborate on it. However, we wouldn’t artificially create a role for the sake of working together, as that could feel contrived. Since we’re friends, spending time together doesn’t necessarily require work.

Although some parts of Avatar 4 have already been filmed due to James Cameron capturing footage of the younger actors at their current age, since there’s a six-year time jump in the movie, principal photography for the rest of it won’t start until after Avatar 3 is released in late 2025. This means that Avatar 5 still needs to be filmed, leaving room for Arnold Schwarzenegger to join if he and Cameron agree he would fit well for any role from a Na’vi hero to a human villain. For now, they are content with enjoying their time together off-set, riding motorcycles and being friendly in casual settings.

As a long-time fan of both science fiction and action movies, I am thrilled to share my excitement about the latest updates on the Avatar franchise and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s TV show FUBAR. Having grown up watching the original Avatar films, I eagerly awaited the release of Avatar 3, which is set to hit theaters in December 2025.
