Following his groundbreaking performance as the lead character in “Conan the Barbarian,” Arnold Schwarzenegger’s star power skyrocketed further with his portrayal of the T-800 cyborg assassin in “The Terminator,” a classic sci-fi film. This role kickstarted a sci-fi franchise that has become one of Schwarzenegger’s most iconic acting achievements. However, even Arnold himself acknowledges his least favorite “Terminator” movie, and his response is fittingly in line with his persona.
During interviews for “FUBAR” Season 2, now available on Netflix along with the animated series “Terminator Zero”, Arnold Schwarzenegger appeared on “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen” and participated in their After Show. There, a fan asked him which “Terminator” film he thought was the worst, to which he responded:
Among all, I’d argue that Terminator Salvation might be the most disappointing [due to the fact that it was released during my term as governor and I wasn’t part of it]. It just seems illogical to create a Terminator film without me being involved in the film itself.
A reasonable observation: In the movie Terminator Salvation (released in 2009), Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character was a digital recreation since he was already serving as California’s Governor at that time and couldn’t act in the film. However, they used Schwarzenegger’s likeness for one of the first T-800s, with Roland Kickinger playing the part physically.

Arnold Schwarzenegger might have valid reasons to dislike “Terminator Salvation” since he wasn’t part of it, but the film didn’t resonate with most viewers for various other factors. Set in a post-apocalyptic 2018 and starring Christian Bale as John Connor, the movie garnered mostly negative reviews and struggled at the box office. To add to its woes, the production company that owned the “Terminator” rights at the time went bankrupt shortly after its release, effectively canceling any plans for sequels to “Salvation”.
Regrettably, the sequels of the Terminator series, specifically Terminator Genisys from 2015 and Terminator: Dark Fate in 2019, didn’t fare well at the box office. Interestingly, while Terminator: Dark Fate received more positive reviews than its predecessor, it wasn’t enough to boost its theater attendance. Additionally, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton have expressed no intention of reprising their roles in the franchise. Given these circumstances, a potential seventh Terminator movie might necessitate a complete overhaul or reboot, a concept that creator James Cameron has already pondered.
