‘Arrow’ Star Katie Cassidy Reveals Truth Behind Black Canary Death

Even though several years have passed, the pain of losing a cherished role can still linger, as seems to be the case for Katie Cassidy. The actress played the adored character Laurel Lance/Black Canary on The CW’s Arrow for four seasons, only to be written off in 2016. When Cassidy found out about her character’s fate, it wasn’t handled ideally, and now she is explaining why she thinks her time on the show eventually concluded.

On the Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast, Cassidy discussed the details surrounding her character’s demise on Arrow and how she discovered this fate. Initially, hints about a character’s death were dropped at the beginning of the season, but Cassidy didn’t anticipate it would be her. Unfortunately, the showrunners contacted Cassidy while she was en route to a comic convention in New York City, informing her that they needed to meet. Eager to learn the reason for the meeting, Cassidy found out she was being released from the show after the convention began. The actress had to maintain a facade of ignorance throughout the event, which only added to the emotional turmoil she experienced. Cassidy later expressed:

Initially, I felt a mix of emotions – both sadness and joy triggered my anger.

Why Was Katie Cassidy Let Go From ‘Arrow’?

Dropping an actress who significantly contributed to a series can stem from numerous factors, with surprise being one of the main ones, but Katie Cassidy suggests there were deeper reasons at play. She stated, “I believe there were multiple factors. I have my own theories. I think it was political. It’s complex.” Later, Cassidy hinted that she felt underappreciated on Arrow, despite her consistent dedication to the show.

It seems that I’ve often found myself at a disadvantage, so I must move on now. Yet, I didn’t raise my voice; instead, I shed tears out of sorrow.

Although Cassidy’s character was killed off in Arrow, she later returned to the Arrowverse as a guest star on The Flash, portraying Black Siren. When producer Marc Guggenheim approached her with an offer, Cassidy eagerly accepted the chance to return. Her role in The Flash was expanded, and it led to her reappearance as a series regular on Arrow. The producers realized they had made a mistake by letting her go initially, and her comeback turned out to be successful for Cassidy. In her own words, “And then I was back, and better than ever, and happy.

The audience backed me due to the popular Flash episode I was in. It seemed the viewership numbers were high, unfortunately though, after my character was killed off, ratings dipped slightly. I’m uncertain about this.

Originating from the minds of Guggenheim, Berlanti, and Kreisberg, “Arrow” spanned eight seasons and an impressive 170 episodes. This popular series was loosely based on DC’s Green Arrow character, focusing on the journey of billionaire playboy Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell), whose life takes a dramatic turn following a shipwreck on Lian Yu island. Upon his return to Starling City, he adopts a new lifestyle dedicated to battling crime and corruption as a masked vigilante. The show also featured talented actors like Collin Donnell, David Ramsey, Willa Holland, Susana Thompson, Paul Blackthorne, Emily Bett Rickards, Colton Haynes, and others throughout its lengthy run.
