Arrow Star Stephen Amell Reacts to Peacemaker’s Brony Joke

Arrow Star Stephen Amell Reacts to Peacemaker's Brony Joke

As a long-time fan of Stephen Amell and his iconic portrayal of Green Arrow, I can’t help but feel a deep sense of camaraderie with him as he speaks out about the treatment his show received over the years. It’s disheartening to see how much Arrow and its spin-offs have been overlooked despite their significant impact on superhero culture.

Stephen Amell dedicated countless hours and emotions to embodying the Green Arrow character over eight demanding seasons on The CW. However, he felt that the show received undeserved criticism for a prolonged period. This is based on Amell’s own words, as he recently reacted to John Cena’s comment about his character in the Season 1 finale of Peacemaker on Max. This remark by Cena seems to validate Amell’s sentiment since Arrow and its numerous spin-offs, often referred to as The Arrowverse, have significantly impacted the superhero genre landscape.

On Chris Van Vliet’s YouTube channel, Amell talked about Cena’s Peacemaker character, who criticized Green Arrow by saying, “That guy attends My Little Pony conventions wearing half of Twilight Sparkle’s costume, with a four-inch-wide hole drilled for his backside.” Ouch! (The phrase “butthole drilled” was replaced with “hole drilled for his backside” to make it less crude and more appropriate for general audiences.)

That was somewhat excessive, and I took strong exception to it. To put it bluntly, there seemed to be a certain disrespect towards our series compared to the movies and Peacemaker. I understand that we’re on The CW, and it’s television, but still…

“I understand that when people consider the latest version of DC, they don’t think of the Snyder Cut; instead, they associate it with the Arrowverse. We have faced criticism for quite some time, and this recent situation seemed like an unnecessary addition to that. I’m not truly angry, but hearing about it made me feel frustrated, almost to the point where I thought, ‘I can’t believe they did this!’

Although Amell might not have enjoyed Cena’s harsh remark, he bears no grudge against him for saying it. Instead, they share a unique bond due to their wrestling background. After all, someone else wrote it – that would be James Gunn, the one Amell believes he should actually be angry with.

“I’m up here. I’m working just as hard as anyone else. Do you know how hard it is to play a superhero with no superpowers for 23 episodes a year? It’s really, really, really hard, and I’m not looking for a prize, but, like, maybe don’t s**t on our show. If I should be mad at anyone, it should be James Gunn for writing that in the first place. But [John Cena] could not be a nicer guy. It’s not a personal vendetta against [Cena].”

Stephen Amell Doesn’t Need James Gunn To Validate Oliver Queen

In a more casual tone, it can be rephrased as: To set the record straight, Amell isn’t holding his breath for a call from Gunn about playing Oliver Queen in the fresh DC Universe. As the co-CEO of DC Studios, Gunn is gearing up for his debut next year with Superman, and after that, he plans to cleanse everyone’s palate from the lingering flavors of the DCEU, which officially concluded with the critically disappointing 2023 film titled Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

Regarding the possibility of showing up in Gunn’s new universe, Amell expressed during a recent interview with MovieWeb that it’s neither a concern nor a desire for him. He takes pride in what he achieved on Arrow, and feels that his character doesn’t require validation through an appearance in Gunn’s DCU.

“I don’t know. I think it would be really helpful to maybe see like a frame of footage from one of the movies before I decide if I want to be a part of it. Because I loved playing Oliver Queen, and I don’t feel like being in the cinematic universe would validate that character. You know, we did eight seasons, we did 170 episodes, and I wouldn’t change a thing. So, you know, if he calls, great, if he doesn’t, fine!”

It’d certainly be enjoyable to watch Stephen Amell as Arrow on the big screen, but for now, it might not happen soon. In the meantime, fans can look forward to him starring in “Suits: L.A.”, a spin-off of the hit legal drama “Suits”, which is set to premiere around 2025.
