Artists Rally Around Climate Change and Social Justice in New Hammer Exhibition

As a lifelong connoisseur of art and a keen observer of societal trends, I must say that the Hammer Museum’s exhibition, Breath(e): Toward Climate and Social Justice, is nothing short of breathtaking – quite literally, given the focus on climate change! The interplay between artists, scientists, and activists is truly inspiring, a testament to the power of collaboration in addressing pressing global issues.

Art has historically served multiple roles within society – it’s a means of personal self-expression, capturing the essence of the current times, and offering insights into potential future developments, whether factual or imagined. In their role as independent influencers, artists have taken up the mantle in recent times to raise awareness about pressing issues such as climate change and social justice. UCLA’s Hammer Museum is currently displaying an exhibition titled “Breath(e): Navigating Climate and Social Justice“, which delves into this intersectional theme.

This exhibit, titled by Glenn Kaino and Mika Yoshitake, is a component of Getty’s regional PST ART: Art and Science Intersect initiative. The showcase displays approximately 100 pieces from 20 artists, scientists, and activists across generations, such as Mel Chin, Ron Finley, Cannupa Hanska Luger, Garnett Puett, and Lan Tuazon, who created works exclusively for this event.

The show originated during the peak of both the COVID-19 crisis and the racial upheaval of 2020. As Hammer explained in a statement, the exhibition aims to question and dismantle deeply entrenched political views related to climate justice in the U.S., while providing fresh insights on land rights and the rights of nature.
