Spoilers ahead for Episode 1 of Will Trent Season 3, called “I’m a Guest Here.”
The long-anticipated return of Will Trent to primetime television happened in the 2025 TV schedule, marking the start of Season 3 on January 7. Following a major cliffhanger at the end of Season 2, when Will left town with just Betty and a bag after arresting Angie, his reluctant return to aid the GBI was triggered by a suspect’s request in the premiere. The storyline became even more intriguing from that point onward. (You can catch up on the Season 2 finale through a Hulu subscription.)
As a devoted movie enthusiast who’s no stranger to procedural shows, let me tell you, what really brought back memories of this beloved cast wasn’t just the plotline, but the distinctive humor that sets it apart from the rest. It’s a rare find in the procedural world, and I’ve seen my fair share.
The series featuring Will Trent certainly isn’t a constant barrage of slapstick comedy, but it does manage to elicit laughter through genuine, everyday scenarios. Instead of relying on characters telling jokes frequently, the humor emerges naturally from situations like Ormewood persistently urging Faith to eat her crackers, or the comedic aspects of Will’s new life in Tennessee. The premiere episode also provided amusement from moments such as Will and his old friend relaxing with his grandmother while armed officers stood guard outside. Even the show’s most significant relationship – that between Will and Betty – offered a touch of humor in an unexpected way.
I also appreciate Faith coldly treating Will due to how he departed, primarily because I trust their friendship will return to its usual state once Will re-joins the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). After all, a crime procedural titled “Will Trent” can’t realistically continue with Will spending his days capturing racy photos in rural Tennessee. Moreover, Gina Rodriguez’s new character made quite an engaging debut.
I must say, my fondness for shows like “Law & Order,” including “FBI,” “One Chicago,” and even “Criminal Minds: Evolution,” despite its reduced procedural focus on streaming platforms these days, is quite evident. I’ve lost count of the number of “SVU” marathons I’ve watched on cable. However, “Will Trent” stands out as unique among crime/procedural dramas due to its distinct charm, and I’m thrilled that it’s back now.
Not only does the season hold exciting prospects beyond just the introduction of Scott Foley’s character in the first episode, but it appears that the Season 3 premiere functions as half of a two-part storyline. Moreover, the sneak peek for the following episode suggests that Will might sustain physical injury, not merely emotional distress due to criticism about his beard style. Check it out here:
As a keen viewer, I’m glad to see our character sporting a vest in the sneak peek for the upcoming episode. Quite intriguing, given his reluctance to wear one as per Faith’s instructions in the series opener! Catch the latest twists and turns on Will Trent every Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET, before diving into High Potential Season 1 at 9 p.m. ET and The Rookie Season 7 at 10 p.m. ET on ABC. If you’re a fan of these shows and want to rewatch earlier episodes, consider subscribing to Hulu for a trip down memory lane.
