As A Fan Of Josh Jackson's Projects Going Back To Mighty Ducks, I Wasn't Expecting The Dawson's Creek Vibes From ABC's Doctor Odyssey

As a long-time fan of Joshua Jackson’s diverse roles, I must say that “Doctor Odyssey” was a delightful surprise, albeit with a hint of nostalgia for my Dawson’s Creek days. The series premiere brought back memories of Pacey, particularly during the dance class scene and the subtle hint of a love triangle brewing among the main characters.

Spoilers ahead for the series premiere of Doctor Odyssey on ABC.

Among the highly anticipated new shows slated for ABC’s 2024 TV lineup is “Doctor Odyssey“, which marks the return of Josh Jackson to a main role on network television since his stint on “Fringe“. In this new medical drama, Jackson portrays Dr. Max Bankman, a highly qualified doctor who finds himself as the ship’s physician on a luxurious ocean liner. Although Jackson has played a doctor before, “Doctor Odyssey” is not another portrayal of a malevolent doctor like “Dr. Death“. As a fan of the actor’s work dating back to the ’90s and his role in “The Mighty Ducks“, I was prepared for an entirely new character in the ABC series… and certainly not to encounter any hints of “Dawson’s Creek“.

To clarify – “Doctor Odyssey” is not a continuation of “Dawson’s Creek: High Seas,” Dr. Max Bankman is not the character “Pacey,” and it’s not implied that Joshua Jackson can only play one kind of role. However, during the series premiere, two aspects reminded me of his “Pacey” days, particularly when he was sharing with nurse practitioner Avery (Phillipa Soo) about where he learned to dance.

As a child, I had a dream of enrolling in dance classes, but in my hometown, it wasn’t typically seen as something boys should do. However, a moment came when I was given a subtle nudge to remember that life is transient and incredibly delicate.

Later on, Max shared a heartfelt narrative about being the initial COVID case identified in Connecticut during early 2020 and how this ordeal inspired him to embrace happiness above all else… which essentially meant he had lastly signed up for a dance class.

Indeed, one instance where it seemed like Pacey was willing to prioritize joy above all else was when he faced the consequences of neglecting his studies. However, his remark about the dance class brought back memories of an episode from Dawson’s Creek, in which Pacey aided Joey (Katie Holmes) by discreetly partnering with her for a dance class.

Moreover, it’s worth noting that a love triangle is starting to unfold among the primary characters in the series Doctor Odyssey. Specifically, the character Tristan (played by Sean Teale) finds himself with feelings for Avery, but Avery seems to be developing affection for Max, who in turn appears to reciprocate. In terms of acting out intricate love triangles on screen, Joshua Jackson has a wealth of experience, having built up his skills during his time on Dawson’s Creek, where Pacey unexpectedly emerged as the romantic adversary to the main character, adding depth to the series.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but reminisce about the tumultuous journey that led Joey and Pacey from sparks flying to becoming the star couple on Dawson’s Creek. So, when even a hint of a love triangle surfaces in Doctor Odyssey, it instantly transports me back to those days. (Just a heads up for those unaware, there are spoilers ahead for Dawson’s Creek.)

In summary, I found the initial episode of Doctor Odyssey enjoyable, and this wasn’t solely due to its similarities with Dawson’s Creek. As a former viewer of the teen drama, a few similarities caught my attention. One quote that particularly stood out for me in the new series was Max’s question at the end of the pilot: “Is every week a theme?” after Avery announced that the next week would be dedicated to singles.

As a gamer, I found it intriguing! The setup for this show seems promising, and the cliffhanger at the end is definitely keeping me hooked for more. If you’re curious about what singles week looks like on The Odyssey, don’t miss the next episode promo!

Tune in every Thursday at 9 p.m. Eastern Time on ABC for the latest episodes of Doctor Odyssey. ABC has given this new series a prime-time spot by moving another medical drama, Grey’s Anatomy, to 10 p.m. ET and scheduling it after 9-1-1 at 8 p.m. If you prefer streaming your TV shows, you can catch Josh Jackson’s new show on Hulu.
