As a seasoned horror enthusiast with decades of chilling cinema under my belt, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation for the upcoming seventh installment of the iconic Scream franchise. While the return of Mason Gooding as Chad Meeks-Martin is certainly exciting news, it leaves me yearning for more – specifically, his twin sister, Mindy, played by Jasmin Savoy Brown.
The resurgence of the horror genre continues unabated, with many top-tier horror films bringing back sequels. For instance, the Scream series is preparing for another installment, and it’s been confirmed that Mason Gooding will reprise his role as Chad Meeks-Martin in the seventh film. However, die-hard fans like myself are hoping for a particular scenario: his twin sister should return too.
As a cinephile, I can tell you that details about Scream 7 are scarce, but it’s evident that director Kevin Williamson is busy putting together the cast. The fans are buzzing with excitement as Neve Campbell will reprise her role as Sidney, and Variety confirms that Gooding will be back too. However, since we know that Sam and Tara Carpenter (portrayed by Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega) won’t be joining in, it leaves Chad on his own adventure. In my view, he needs Jasmin Savoy Brown, who plays Mindy Meeks-Martin, to join the cast as well for everything to fit together neatly.
In the 2022 movie “Scream,” Chad’s character had a secondary role, but he didn’t share many scenes with the original cast or take part in the climactic fight against Ghostface. However, he managed to survive and will have more screen time in the sixth film now that the main four characters are no longer present. To maintain a connection between Chad and legacy characters such as Sidney, it would be beneficial for his twin sister to appear alongside him in future scenes.
Ever since her debut, the character Mindy, played by Brown, has become a beloved figure among fans. She can be seen as a modernized, younger, LGBTQ+ take on the character Randy, delivering horror-themed monologues while the group navigates through the last two movies. Additionally, Mindy and Chad share a lively banter, making it seem odd if only one of them were present in Scream 7.
Last January, Jasmin Savoy Brown mentioned she hadn’t spoken to anyone regarding another role. With Scream 7 currently in the casting phase, there’s a good chance that conversation will start soon. It turned out advantageous for her to wait, as she was occupied with filming Yellowjackets Season 3. However, since the show is set for release in February, her schedule should become less packed, potentially allowing her to revisit Woodsboro (or the location of Ghostface’s next rampage).
It’s going to be challenging for some “Scream” fans to enjoy the upcoming movie without Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera, as they played the main characters, the Carpenter sisters, in the last two films. However, the return of Mindy and Chad Meeks-Martin could help alleviate this transition, linking the seventh film with its predecessors. Let’s hope we hear casting updates about Brown soon.
