In Season 12, Chicago P.D. has been particularly tough on Detective Ruzek. It started with the brutal demise of an old comrade and then became entangled in the tragic saga of a young girl named Zoe. This child had spent her entire life surrounded by death due to her abduction. Unfortunately, the case of little Zoe was left unresolved at the end of its initial airing on the 2025 television schedule, and Chicago P.D. is set to revisit it soon. Reflecting on this upcoming continuation of Zoe’s story brings to mind the comments made by actor Patrick John Flueger about collaborating with young actress Annabelle Toomey during the Ruzek/Zoe scenes.
The upcoming “Chicago P.D.” installment titled “Marie” will air at its regular 10 p.m. Eastern Time on February 26th. As announced by NBC, this episode finds Ruzek grappling with his father’s deteriorating health while the Intelligence unit pursues a ruthless serial killer. A sneak peek suggests that Zoe may be kidnapped and in need of rescue. In her debut appearance back in January (which can now be streamed with a Peacock subscription), she formed a special bond with Ruzek stronger than any other squad member.
In my conversation with Patrick John Flueger at the time, I observed that Chicago P.D. has a talent for discovering strong young actors such as Ramona Edith Williams, who portrays Makayla, to tackle intense, grim storylines. Excitedly, he agreed, saying “We’ve done it again!”, and proceeded to discuss his experience working with Annabelle Toomey.
She’s incredibly talented, almost awe-inspiring. Her skills are impressive to say the least. They make things effortless. I found myself comfortable just talking with her. I believe she’s around eight years old. She’s playing at a level of six or eight, give or take, and when I asked about her knowledge, it was surprising. Often, parents shield children from complex details, and truthfully, she didn’t require the whole script. However, her understanding of what she needed to do is astounding.
It’s safe to assume that many viewers who tuned in for her debut episode, titled “Zoe,” would concur that the young actress wasn’t required to grasp the intricacies of the serial killer plotline. Annabelle Toomey, you see, is making a significant leap with Chicago P.D., her first major role after a single episode in Chicago Fire (portraying a different character) and three episodes in The Bear. It’s worth noting that the characters she played on those shows didn’t have experiences similar to Zoe’s! Flueger further added:
The director approached and suggested, “Hey, might you consider slowing down a bit for this scene?” At one instance, she was instructed to momentarily halt before replying to me, and that brief pause significantly enhanced the episode. It was an awkward situation as she paused longer than expected, leaving me questioning if she had forgotten her lines. However, it was clear she hadn’t, as her performance remained intense. She truly impressed me. I must admit.
As I’ve been fortunate enough to work alongside Annabelle Toomey for some time on One Chicago, I can personally attest that her talent was so immense, it felt almost uneasy watching her portray Zoe. Patrick John Flueger wasn’t intending any criticism when he said this, and the young actress already seems to have mastered complex storylines, even though she might not have known all the intricate details. He shared an interesting conversation we had about this:
On our first day working together, I said, “Annie, you seem quite talented at this, don’t you?” To which she replied, “What exactly do you mean?” I responded, “You have a natural knack for it.” She chuckled and casually mentioned, “I know,” indicating a sense of self-assurance without being arrogant.
It’s uncertain yet what part Toomey will play in the upcoming episode, focusing on Zoe’s kidnapping. Her image appears in the preview, but no fresh scenes featuring Zoe directly have been shown. Let’s hope this doesn’t indicate that Ruzek and the team won’t be able to locate her before the episode concludes. Take a peek for yourself:

The One Chicago block of shows begins each Wednesday with “Chicago Med” at 8 p.m. ET, followed by “Chicago Fire” at 9 p.m. ET, and concluding with the adventures of the Intelligence Unit.
