As Fan Campaign To Save My Lady Jane Heats Up, The Stars’ Story About Their Chemistry Read Hits Even Harder

As a dedicated fan who has been swept away by the enchanting world of My Lady Jane, I can’t help but feel a pang of sorrow as the series faces cancellation after just one captivating season. The heart-wrenching tale of Jane and Guildford, beautifully brought to life by Emily Bader and Edward Bluemel, has left an indelible mark on my heart, and I can’t help but feel that their story is far from over.

Supporters of “My Lady Jane” on Prime Video received disappointing news in early August when the historical romance series was terminated following only one season. Although the show didn’t leave fans hanging with a life-or-death cliffhanger, the executive producers had aspirations for a second season. However, viewers who were smitten by Jane and Guildford’s love story are reluctant to let go, and the campaign to rescue the series remains active. And given Emily Bader and Edward Bluemel’s account of their on-screen chemistry during auditions, it’s no wonder that many want another season!

As a passionate gamer, I jumped right in to make sure Amazon Prime Video knows that the second season of “My Lady Jane” needs to be saved. The first fan-led movement aimed for 50,000 signatures, and when that mark was hit, we didn’t stop there – we raised the bar to 75,000. In just one day, an additional 1,808 people added their names to the petition. A second wave of support is gaining traction now, with over 14,000 signatures already collected and counting. Let’s keep the momentum going!

Beyond their efforts so far, the devoted fanbase has initiated a GoFundMe campaign titled “Donate to help #SaveMyLadyJane”. This hashtag has been a hot topic on social media platforms like X (previously known as Twitter) ever since the cancellation announcement on August 16. Regardless of whether the decision to terminate is overturned, it’s clear that these fans aren’t backing down from their struggle just yet.

Concerning the topic of combat… During a chat with Emily Bader and Edward Bluemel, who star in “My Lady Jane,” this past summer as part of the 2024 TV lineup, Bader disclosed an interesting detail about their first encounter. According to her, they initially crossed paths during rehearsals for the stunt choreography involving Jane and Guildford engaging in a sword fight with daggers. To quote Bader directly:

Hey there! First time we crossed paths was during a practice session, but let’s call it an unusual icebreaker. So, hey, nice to finally meet ya. Fancy a friendly spar? I’ve got a couple of swords here if you’re game.

Lady Jane’s cast was exceptionally skilled, yet it’s hard to imagine that the show would have amassed such a dedicated audience through Amazon Prime Video if the two main actors hadn’t delivered stellar performances and didn’t exhibit the necessary chemistry. Having watched the entire season before my conversation with the stars, I inquired about their audition process. Bluemel recounted his own journey:

During my audition, I found myself in a small hotel in Nova Scotia, Canada, filming something else when I had to record a tape. Instead of reading a poem quietly, I loudly recited a Latin poem multiple times, which certainly attracted attention. The town of Lunenburg was abuzz with news about the boy shouting the Latin poem. This audition process proved quite lengthy.

Only a handful of individuals would probably never need to loudly recite a Latin poem onto a recording as a job requirement, but it undeniably helped Edward Bluemel secure his role as Guildford! Emily Bader, who recently shared her sad feelings about the cancellation with an emotional post, also confirmed that the audition process took some time.

One scenario is when you audition and nothing happens for three months, leaving it tucked away in your thoughts. However, an unexpected call arrived asking me to return to Los Angeles since I had gone on a trip – this is often how jobs come about. Things started moving swiftly from that point, resembling a dream in its rapid pace.

Demonstrating individually that they were capable of playing their respective characters was one aspect; the actors chosen for Jane and Guildford needed to create an attractive dynamic between them. As Blueemel puts it, the chemistry between them wasn’t overwhelmingly passionate at first, but looking back, it makes for a charming tale. He elaborated:

Initially, we connected during an online chemistry study session via Zoom. Eager to convey my strong interest in you, I struggled to project that through the screen, attempting to catch your gaze via the camera. However, with a slight delay of three seconds, the atmosphere became less romantic and more awkward.

As a gamer diving into an immersive role-playing session, I can say that a Zoom chemistry reading for actors trying to nail roles in a heartwarming romance series feels more like a grueling boss battle than a romantic rendezvous! Bader shared an extra layer of challenge by revealing one method to make these readings even more uncomfortable. However, Bluemel managed to find a glimmer of hope amidst the awkwardness.

  • Emily Bader: “And it gets frozen on one blink. Always really it’s great. [laughs].”
  • Edward Bluemel: “Luckily, we clearly managed to do something that felt right.”

As a devoted fan, it’s clear that the on-screen magic between the stars is undeniably spot-on. It’s tough to envision anyone else stepping into the shoes of Jane and Guildford at this juncture, but I couldn’t help but wonder if they ever read for their roles with someone else during auditions. I inquired about this very topic, and Emily Bader graciously shared:

Indeed! There were several Guildfords, but you stand out as the first one I encountered, and they shared with me a secret admiration for you. They’d hint, ‘We’re quite fond of this fellow.’ Our connection was instantaneous, and I found myself hoping that it would work out. And it did! I sensed it all along, I believe.

It remains uncertain whether the Season 1 finale of “My Lady Jane” marks the end of the series permanently, as many fans still express their desire for more. If you’re eager to rewatch or even discover this unique portrayal of British history, I’m delighted to inform you that the cancellation doesn’t mean Amazon will erase the show from its library. You can stream all eight episodes of “My Lady Jane” right now with a Prime Video subscription!
